@Cyberdyne 101 , you are the best. You remind me of a heroic lovable robot sidekick from some movie that uses pictures as a ways of communicating. I know that could possible be taken the wrong way but please know I mean it in the best way possible.
Like him?!

Thanks, I appreciate it!!

The bonus of working in surgery...

I'm pulling an all nighter and I can change into scrubs to make it look like I just came in super early...

🙁

Are the "XXX school of medicine class of 2019" facebook pages created by someone official/already affiliated with the school, or is it made by students starting that year?

5 AM.

Took a work break by doing 50 pushups straight. I guess I can do this every hour. Why not.

Delirious typing brought to you by stress and copious amounts of caffeine!

Good times.

I'm finally at the part where I rewrite the discussion except I don't think I can really do it lol.

I recently started watching House of Cards. Finished season 1, and am underway with season 2.

I don't think I've ever felt so aghast (or, DID THAT REALLY JUST HAPPEN?!) as I did in the first episode of season 2.
I watched that yesterday too! I was stunned!!! I've watched the entire first season since Friday, when my fiance got me started.

So my mom sent my resume to one of her colleagues because I was interested in the field she was in and wanted to know more. Her colleague told me to send an email to her assistant to set up a time to talk... The problem is that said colleague has a gender-neutral (or masculine sounding) name and I referred to her with male pronouns even though she's female when sending the email to her assistant :/ What should I do?

If it hasn't been addressed as an issue, I would just transition to using female pronouns when mentioning her from now on. If the assistant/colleague complains or brings it up, I would just apologize for not asking the gender of the colleague since she had a gender-neutral name.

Not a big deal lol don't mention it. You could even make it a joke if someone brings it up and thinks it's funny haha

Today I had the great pleasure of meeting @researchismymiddlename here in STL! She is an incredibly awesome person, and I think Wash U would be mistaken if they don't accept her.

Awww it was such a joy meeting you as well!! The drive back up here was SO TREACHEROUS. As a gal who goes 80 mph on 65 mph highways, I was forced to go 30 mph for like 1.5 hrs because of the snow. 😡 Regardless, it was so nice meeting you, Ace!! :biglove: Yes, I shall freak you out again with my emoji junkie ways 😉 Thanks again for the kind words, it was great talking with you!

Isn't she absolutely phenomenal?!?!

Awww @sunflower18 you too!! 😀 Ace and I talked about meeting SDNers in real life and of course we talked about you! 😍

I'm so glad your drive was safe!!!! I can't drive in the snow, so that sounds terrifying. Thank goodness you made it, despite it being a frustrating journey.

Awww you talked about me?! Good things I hope... 😉

It's like a abductor adductor exercise... people call it that because you open and close your legs. It's a stupid name for it...

hahahah. I will be sure to casually use this term sometime to up my bro points

I wish I had one of those at my gym. For how much I pay for membership, my gym is pretty limited in what machines it has. I really wish I had access to a good bodybuilding gym as they have so many options and work arounds for injuries.

Also, I'm 100% sure I can find a thread addressing this but what type of computer are you guys gonna use for medical school? I may or may not have spilled chocolate milk on my laptop while one a plane ride so I am thinking about this question right about now...
Do you need anything high capacity for medical school?

If I get into my top choice (fingers crossed), I'll just use the iPad they make you buy. Otherwise, I'll just stick to the laptop I've been using.

I was doing some random late night MDApp stalking. And came across this guy who ONLY got accepted to 3 schools.

😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵

Pretty good, considering he only had a 1.0 GPA and 3 MCAT! 😉

AND HAAAAPPPYYYY BIRTHDAY @Cyberdyne 101! Sorry about that food poisoning. Hope it goes away ASAP. 🙁

😱 Eeeek. My condolences to your computer (and chocolate milk). I was considering buying a MacBook Air – just something light enough to lug to class and back. I'm more of a pen-and-paper notetaker, but it is nice not to have to print out lectures.

I have an '08 MacBook, whose keyboard is stained this dirty orange colour from typing with carrot-stained fingers. It's ugly and doesn't hold a charge for longer than 3h, but runs beautifully.

I have a 5 year old macbook and was thinking about upgrading it as well.

carrots can stain your fingers?

I should clarify: while writing essays, I'd have either a huge bowl of chopped carrots or pomegranate seeds that I'd snack from. The carrot/pom juice on my fingers stuck to the keys and never truly could be cleaned off. 🙁 Now my once snow-white laptop is more of a dingy cream.

Same here. I love my '08 MacBook, it has survived so much but the battery (even after replacing it) just won't cut it anymore. I really need something new, and I'm thinking a Pro.

I initially had a lenovo clunker laptop (thing was like 6+ lbs) and then switched to the Macbook Air. My back is thanking me! Also, the battery life is wonderful. I went from 50 min to 11 or so hours. I never had to bring my charger with me on interviews 🙂

I'd like a pro, but I can't get pass the attraction of being able to just dump my laptop in my handbag and not noticing the weight that much.

I was thinking of getting either a Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro or the latest MacBook Air. Med school's worth dropping the dollars for the newest and latest technology lololol.

Lugging around my MacBook Pro ('09) had been killing my back during undergrad, but then I switched to an iPad senior year.

While I can do a ton of stuff on it and it's lighter weight is nice, a tablet is not wholly a laptop replacement.

So now I'm considering the Air, though the switch to the lightning port/having to get all new adapters peeves me.

Ditto, I'm feeling the Air, but thinking that a touch screen would be nice to mark up diagrams, etc. Anybody have thoughts if this would actually be helpful?

If you have an iPad and any kind of MacBook, you can download Notability, which allows you to annotate notes uploaded into the app (could be PDFs, word docs, etc.) on your iPad and then use iCloud to transfer them to your computer. That might be a process, but it's what I've been doing for a few years and it's pretty nice.

Grab an air or something like it for travel/on the go and get a big monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, for your room.

Being able to look at a bigger screen for lectures etc is hella helpful.

Not that I know of. I was thinking of just sticking with a MacBook pro but Lenovo has some cool convertable pc tablet thingamajigs so I'm a little torn if it's actually worth it. My family does have a Verizon tablet just laying around from some promotion that I might grab for school but I'm not even sure if I would use it
Tablet laptops are not at a point where it's a great idea to buy them yet. Currently, it's more likely than not that they're not worth the premium they charge.

Lenovo X1 is great. Don't get the ****ty touch screen version. If you go Mac, MBP is more worth it than the MBA; minimal extra weight. Otherwise, the X1 or any other Lenovo <3-pounder is great

I use a mac retina pro 13'' (display is awesome) and the weight is pretty light, not that much diff compared to the air, while having better specs. Memory wise, i doubt you'll need all the extra memory. If you do, external hard drive is becoming super cheap now.

FWIW I think it's pretty easy to switch over to macs since they are pretty user friendly, however I'm really not tech suave so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

This is really helpful, thanks!

How do people feel about paying more for extra memory space? My inclination is the couple hundred isn't worth it since most things will be stored on the cloud anyway... And thoughts on retina display?

I tried to figure out what that guy's deal was. Apparently he used to have this advice on his MDApps:
From Farmerboy's MD Apps:
"-I do not not recommend applying to safety schools
-I recommend graduating early from undergrad if possible, UNLESS you are an engineer or mathematics student
-I recommend every pre-med student play a varsity or international level sport and conduct research during undergrad"
I think he must be a combination of brilliant and crazy.
