Also to all the wannabe data nerds, some of these coursera courses are coming up soon. Might be worth playing with if you're interested in learning some stats.

I'm cutting down my work hours like woah lately, so I might try playing with R. If enough people are interested, maybe we can make a group and do some stuff over skype for this?

YES! So good! I have about 50 pages to go. I didn't think one book could surprise me so much, but I just never know what's coming. It's beautifully written, too.

Yeah, first 50 pages are so slow, but it takes off like a rocket after that. I loved it.
I actually bumped into a girl reading it on the T while I was reading it too. That was pretty awesome.

R is awesome -- very versatile and it can make some snazzy figured too, hahah. Have fun exploring!

I've been trying to get more comfortable with bash. Coming from C++ and python, bash looks so random with all its symbols and letters splattered about. I usually give up trying to parse through the gibberish after a few lines. Meepmeep. Anyone have any handy resources to make bash more, erm, readable?

This is what I started doing a couple months ago when I had free time (not that course, but similar ones). Then my work got disgustingly busy, but I should have free time starting next week (cutting back work hours like you) to get back into the R/stats.

I have practically zero coding background, so this is a fun intro to that side of things.

Just received the self-evaluation from the pre-health advisors for everyone planning on matriculating in 2017... Why does our committee letter require a letter from an MD that specifically talks about patient (not clinical subject research) interaction? 🙁

Graham to the Hawks.

My Jimmys are definitely Russelled.

They're patients too if they're being treated as well. I'd just do that and ask the doctor to comment on the patient interaction part of it.

That's pretty stupid though.

@jsquared91 Hmm...that's interesting. I actually like her matter-of-fact language.

But I guess it's all about preference. Everyone will not like every single book.

At a yoga class yesterday someone new to the studio mentioned in passing that she was a medical student. Very curious, I asked if she goes to UW (since it's the only school in the state....lol. There are DO schools I think.) And she said no, I go to Bastyr. Bastyr is a naturopathic/oriental medicine/acupuncture school -_____-;;;

Oh goodness... my sympathies. That's a pretty ridiculous requirement. Not all clinical activities have direct interaction/supervision from physicians... I'd even hazard to say that most don't.

Is there any way you can petition to get out of that specific letter mandate?

Yeah, probably didn't go into it with the right expectations, I probably would have enjoyed it much more if it was a series of magazine articles than a book.

Also if all internet disagreements worked like this, SDN would be a much less entertaining place

Found this on the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges website and thought it was interesting:

“Having attended an osteopathic medical school for three years prior to transitioning into naturopathic medicine, I am convinced of the positive impact NDs can make on the world. I have no reservations about my decision to become a naturopath, and I feel that my training at SCNM is comparable, if not superior, to that of any conventional medical school.”

One of my mentors actually has her N.D., she decided to go back to school for her D.O. said it would afford her more opportunities. I personally think its an interesting field.

Yikes.

I doubt it, unfortunately. My prehealth advisors aren't incompetent but they haven't been as helpful as SDN! I might mention to them that such a requirement may be much harder for some students (who don't have parents who know doctors) to fill. Otherwise, fingers crossed that I get an internship at a hospital!

No offense to NDs...my mom is going to school to be one. But there are way too many things that a (traditional) physician is able to do that a naturopathic one can't, like replace a knee or immunize against measles, that the two are simply not comparable. Naturopathic medicine can be better in some cases--pain management for one--but to say "I am a doctor" without the "naturopathic" is completely misleading. 😕

This is the 2nd best thing I've seen all day.

Yeah, I liked albany so it's pretty great. I'm having some fun too. I'm going to london for a week soon and am planning on traveling to SE Asia this summer.

(I'll save the best thing for a time when I can be a bit more anonymous)

I'd posit that most traditional physicians can't replace a knee. 😛

Atleast I wouldn't want them replacing mine.

I agree... They're still doctors though.

When society thinks of doctors, they think of a person that can help them if they're sick or if they get into an accident or there's a medical emergency etc.

In that setting, phds, naturopaths, etc, don't count. Doesn't mean there's no use for them, just that it's disingenuous.

Remember what JD stands for?

Absolutely! However, it weird when I see an article or publication writen by a Dr. Jane Doe (only to read the teensy little words buried somewhere in the article this person had a phd in art history).

I actually had a professor who's assistance barked at me because I called her Professor So & So. He was all like it's Dr. So & So to you. I'm like ohhhkay. (meanwhile she has her phd in latin american studies).

I refer to deans at med schools as Dean even though most of them are doctors.

I agree that most people worked hard for whatever degree they have, but that person is a professor... I'd be annoyed if an M.D. Professor did the same thing.

Where I went to college, one of my professors hated being called doctor. She was only to be called by her first name or she'd coldly call you student if you referred to her as professor.

She was a damned good mentor too.

Edit : she was a PhD

My friend works in IT, his supervisor insist on everyone calls him Dr. So & So, because he has a PhD in "marketing".

Those were my favorites! One of my PIs was the same way, but I had a really difficult time calling him by his first name. I felt disrespectful, even though the respectful thing would be to call him as he wanted! I just wasn't accustomed to it.

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't care if a non-STEM PhD wants to be called Dr?

It's not so much that we care about non-STEM professors, but people who a) aren't professors, period, and b) aren't doctors of medicine, because the term is colloquially used to describe doctors of medicine.

I think it is one thing to acknowledge a degree you've earned and another thing to shove it down someone's throat.

I don't ever plan on being called "Dr" when I'm ordering a frappe at Starbacks. Just not gonna happen.

Funny, I would with a healthcare agency and one of client's had a psychiatrist daughter. Every time (and I mean every time) any one spoke to her they HAD to call her Dr. XYZ. Like if so someone said Oh Good Morning Ms. XYZ she would bug out ... "Who do you think you are I AM DR. XYZ." (screaming at the top of her lungs)

I always got a kick out saying "Oh... ok Ms. XYZ" lol

Ohh I'm going to SE Asia over the summer too! Do you have the countries picked out?

So has everyone pretty much decided where they're going to school next year? Minus those on waitlists 😉

I have a parent with a PhD and they dislike being introduced as "Dr. Nutella" outside of their workplace because people instantly assume that they're a medical doctor. They put it this way: "If you're on a plane and they ask if there is a doctor on board are you going to raise your hand? If so, you're a doctor. If not, don't introduce yourself as one."

However, I'm all for people with anthropology, engineering, English lit, chemistry, theology, underwater basket-weaving, pancake-making, etc. PhDs touting their hard-earned Dr. I don't really care about having a title, though it's kind of nice for us gals to not have to deal with the Miss/Ms/Mrs debacle. Dr. Nutella sounds a lot better than Ms. Nutella.

Nevertheless, a family acquaintance went through this program and insists on being called "Doctor ___." :grumpy: "The DSS Program is a three-year program, with students meeting one weekend a month for nine months each year." Ooooohkay.

Hellanutella I like the plane analogy. I've heard it used before.

She was my advisor and used to refer to me as idiot boy. I got used to calling her by her first name lol. She also bonded with my mom around the time I had some health issues in college. That was pretty funny. They ganged up on me.

Kinda but not really. Let me know if you want a travel buddy for a leg. I'd be down to coordinate. For srs.
