Thanks for all of your help guys! I will probably sign up for the class that goes over my summer semester — it's set to meet Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 7-10 PM. I'm actually getting kind of excited to start studying! I'm going to be taking two classes (biochem and advanced physics lab) so it hopefully shouldn't be too much to handle, especially after quantum this semester :hungover:. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is Tuesdays and Thursdays, when I have biochem lab so my classes will be 10-6 and then the MCAT class 7-10 😕.

@TxC, I agree that the schedule is a great motivator! I've checked and unfortunately it seems like my school doesn't offer a discount on TPR. Was your school's discount a discount code or through some sort of website portal?

@sunflower18 I'm glad to hear that! It is unfortunately a lot of money to shell out but my boyfriend keeps telling me that my future is worth it, haha. I recently took a Kaplan diagnostic and scored a 501 (I think that's ~24 on the old MCAT) so I sure hope that my score increases at least 6 points! To be fair, I was so bad a remembering chemistry questions that I ended up guessing on most of them and I finished the entire diagnostic in about half the time allotted.

@Cyberdyne 101 I forgot you weren't the class of 2019! Let me know how the Kaplan course goes and if you would like moral support throughout studying! When are you planning on taking the exam?

@hoihaie Do they let you know who your instructors will be ahead of time? I'm sorry to hear that your experience was subpar :/

Actually, on this topic, the other day I made a pros and cons list using only bad reasons I had floating around in my head. I had stuff like:

SOM X Pros: Has the latest start date; Grandma has heard of it
SOM X Cons: An acquaintance I find irritating goes there; I am not smart enough to do well there

It was an interesting exercise--kind of helpful to get all this stuff out!
I completely disagree with this part.

Very kind of you. It is a sincere feeling, though, and I have it about all of my schools.

I try to comfort myself by saying that many incoming students must feel the same way...does anybody else here?

I absolutely feel this way. Me, at a top 20 school? Terrifying. They must have made a huge mistake.

@dechristine They have instructor performance evals, maybe they'll let you look at that. You could also try and sit in on a current session. Sometimes they have more than 1 instructor for the subjects too

I don't feel that way. I expect to be average or possibly slightly above average. I also won't be surprised if I am below average. I just want to be a physician. Everything else is gravy.

I studied on my own. I used EK books and a bunch of AAMC practice tests. And the self assessment.
Ditto. Plus some Kaplan books from the library, which give you access to the Kaplan online materials 😉

I sympathize of course, but clearly they made no such mistake!

I aspire to more fully appreciate this reality, Ms. Knope.

@dechristine it was just a code, and then TPR checked to see if I had a valid school email address to verify.

BTW, I had a great physics instructor and did very well on the PS section (maybe you'll get the same person since I think he only teaches online classes). @hoihaie sorry to hear that you did't have a good PS instructor; I guess it really depends on luck.

I'm not taking a course (I'm too poor for that lol). I'm just using the Kaplan material for initial content review. Here's a rough sketch of my plan (which is subject to change of course):
1) Initial content review with Kaplan material and my textbooks. I'll focus first on the material that I haven't seen in a while (which is basically everything except orgo and biochem ). And of course I'll make a comprehensive Anki deck 😀

1a) Passages, verbal, passages, verbal, passages, and update my Anki/content review as needed with other material.

2) Non-AAMC full lengths to assess my strengths and weaknesses (some of these might be part of Step 1a). More verbal. Update Anki.

3) AAMC practice exams.

I plan on taking it sometime in 2016. I work full-time and since it's a brand new test, I'm not ready to set a specific target date. I'll take it when I feel ultra-comfortable 😀

And yes, let's keep in touch during this process!!!!

@sunflower18, @breakintheroof, and others:
I think you guys are creating an artificial level of academic standards. The bar for med school admissions (particularly for the top 20 or so) is already pretty damn high because there is a scarcity of seats. So if you've gotten into a US MD school, you clearly possess the academic aptitude that's needed to perform well. It's ok to have doubts, but please don't sell yourselves short.

Thanks, I needed that!

You're right. I know you are. I just don't feel super smart! But I gotta work on that confidence 🙂 thank you!

You guys are focusing way too much on academic metrics. And it's totally understandable considering what you all had to do to get to this point, but keep in mind that being a physician requires skills outside of academics. And omg, you of all people should feel confident about the journey ahead given your personal qualities!!!!

🙂 🙂 🙂 thank you so much. I really appreciate your reality check and kind words! You are absolutely right. I'm excited. I'm going to be a doctor, and I'll work tirelessly to ensure that im a good one, both academically and interpersonally! It'll all work out 🙂 in fact, it'll be wonderful!

Thank you 🙂

Just signed up for a course last minute in the afternoon yesterday. Learned all about scoliosis surgery then did a cadaver lab. It was me and an MS 1 with a cadaver to ourselves the way the groups worked out. Two of us with attention from one attending. Freaking awesome.

Umm are you kidding me? They would have made a mistake NOT letting you in. 😏
Am I right or am I right?
I don't know. Why would any medical school accept someone who possesses, all at once, intelligence, humility and incredibly positive altitude? It doesn't make ANY sense to me. 😊😊

omg you guys I'm blushing. You are all seriously the best. So so so so kind and supportive!!! Thank you so much!!! :biglove::biglove::biglove: I'm so proud to be going into a profession where you guys will be my colleagues. It's truly humbling.

I think that, deep down, we all feel some degree of imposter's syndrome as medical students (unless you're arrogant and completely lack self-awareness). I know that I still feel quite inadequate compared to my peers and wonder how I got into med school this year.

Hey, those worried about smartness perception... it doesn't matter. You're going to be a doctor! Try not to worry about those around you. Everyone has their own struggles. Nobody is perfect! And bottom line, you deserve to be there. Nobody "sneaks in".

I know some places are ranked and have a more "dog eat dog" environment, but it's really all about how much you put in. I really believe that what you put in is what you will get out of medical school. (At least, that's what my mentor that is in residency has told me. Of course, I'm not speaking from experience.)

Personally, I don't find class rank to be a downside. If you end up 1st quartile or top 10% or whatever, it helps you. Class rank only hurts you if you end up at the bottom....and from what I've read on the allopathic forums, you have to be really bad at memorizing/studying to end up there. If you go to a school without class rank that also uses true P/F preclinical curriculum, then you'll need to prove yourself otherwise.

Ace, killing it again.

Only pre clinical years are ever true p/f or unranked so you'll get your precious rank in medical school.

I'm almost impressed by your ability to say what you think while simultaneously putting other people down at the same time.

Except for Yale, which is awesome. Only school I'm kind of mad about not getting into since I feel like it really is different!

Hey everyone! I've been lurking for a while but I decided to finally become more social. I essentially took one and half/ two gaps years and I don't know any other applicants, so I'm looking forward to passing the time with you all. Congrats on all the acceptances, too!

I was under the impression that true P/F without internal ranking meant you didn't get any class rank throughout your time in med school, not even after 3rd year when you do get graded. I'm not attacking anyone, just merely stating my opinion and some stuff I read on the allo forums.

Is there a post or comprehensive list of advice of good ways to prepare for medical school from the time you are accepted until the first day of classes? Aside from the obvious things like housing.

No grades during clinical years is incredibly rare. Some pass fail places also rank but don't show students. It just shows up on the deans letter.

Might just be me, but you sound incredibly bitter in many of your recent posts.

What would I be bitter about, exactly? Please do enlighten me.

I think I'm going to throw caution to the wind and quit my job even earlier than I'd planned to travel.

My housing situation is miserable. I told my housemate that she didn't have any authority to evict me since I'm on the lease and I came home to a changed Wi-Fi password so I have no internet other on than my phone.

Things just ended with the girl I was seeing which is fine since we're both leaving in a couple of weeks anyway and it wasn't going anywhere. Still annoying though.

I feel like I should be on top of the world right now but I feel like a kid that got into trouble with their parents and wants to run away from everything... When it rains it pours.

Sorry, needed to vent.

🙁 No need to apologize.

Your housemate is being so rude. Do you pay for the Internet? Stop now. Take that money and put it toward a Wi-Fi hotspot from your phone to your laptop.

Just breathe. This chapter will be over soon and before you know it you'll be in the midst of medical school.

Hey everyone!! This is my first time posting, so I'm sorry if I'm totally not following the rules haha. I don't mean to jack this thread, but since I'm part of the class of 2019 and probably am too young to be on this forum, I figured I'd just post here:

I'm still trying to decide what college I should attend for pre-med; I'm debating between U of I Urbana-Champaign (for bioE), Notre Dame for Neuroscience and Behavior, UW-Madison for biochem, and Purdue for biochem.

What do you guys think? Does my choice in college/major have a huge impact on med school acceptance?

Doing really well in a major you love at a college that fosters your individual passions has a huge impact on med school acceptance.

Pick the school that will give you the most resources to help you achieve your goals. I have no idea what your goals are besides getting into med school, but pick the school that'll allow you to pursue whatever you want.

Caveat: Don't waste time changing your major like 10 times. You don't want to end up being the second semester senior taking 3-4 difficult required classes for your major because you didn't plan well.

Small tip: this is the thread for students accepted to incoming medical school class of 2019 (getting an MD by 2019). You probably belong to class of 2023, which hasn't been created yet.

And @ProbablyAPenguin and @Ace Khalifa did a happy penguin job in addressing your questions :penguin:

I'm so sorry to hear about your housing situation. 🙁

I don't understand why your housemate wants you out so badly/early. Seems super sketch.
