Bio 2 in my college was basically A&P, but extremely detailed, and it added insects and plants to the mix. I'm taking a Genetics course right now. If you're interested, there's a set of videos by a group called 23andMe that's on YouTube. It explains everything and makes it interesting too.

Language immersion is really the best, and it also gets you to learn slang. You'll never really learn slang words/phrases or colloquial phrases in a typical language class. But you'll get it in the country itself. I encourage everyone to do a study abroad trip in the country of their choice, if they have the means to do so. It's a fantastic experience!

No kidding. I feel like what we learn in language classes is so formal and unlike what people of that country actually speak like. I wish that the pre-med schedule allowed for an actual semester of study abroad :/ I just can't find any time for me to go abroad other than the summer.

I am a sophomore, but I'm not planning on taking a gap year. I hope to have all my pre-reqs done to take the MCAT in 2014, and apply for matriculation that June, to matriculate in 2015. This is the plan for now at least.

My study abroad for Russia is only offered in the summer, probably because no one wants to go to Russia in the winter. :laugh:

Oh, gotcha. So your time off between undergrad and college is just going to be spent doing interviews and secondaries and hearing back. That's a good plan! 🙂

Ooohhh so true. I forgot that Russia is the coldest place pretty much ever in the winter, hahaha. I don't know too much about Russia, other than that I LOVELOVELOVE the russian revolution.
 
Hey 2019ers, sorry to randomly jump into this thread but I have a few questions for you guys. After going through the grind of preparing for medical school applications I came across a lot of things I should have done better or prepared better for. I decided it would be both fun and beneficial to create an iPhone app that helps premed students track their hours for volunteering, shadowing, etc... As well as keep information about doctors that you have shadowed, essay ideas, and perhaps school info. Any comments or suggestions on this? Would you guys use this if I put it on the app store?

General question for y'all!

I have heard multiple times on this forum and other such places that an ideal application tells a story, and that all of the parts are linked together and flow. This sounds like a great thing to do and have, and I feel like such an application is within my grasp... But there are one or two activities that I participate in currently / am planning on starting shortly that just stick out because they are basically unrelated to my overall theme. I REALLY love these activities though, and am learning a lot from them! They just don't necessarily fit with the message I hope to send with my application.

Do you think that's okay..? It just seems strange and random to have a few loose and unconnected ECs like that, but maybe the all-15-activities-connected ideal is not really that important. Thoughts?

I'd much rather do stuff I like rather than what's necessary for an application.

I actively volunteer at some places completely unrelated to others, so I don't think it's all that important to have everything connected. Your ECs should try tell who you are as a person, and what you like to do.

Agreed. I'm definitely one for the opinion that you want to stand out, and not just look like everyone else. Don't be a Bio/Chem major unless you really do love it. Join groups and clubs that you like. Do ECs/volunteer at places that aren't all necessarily related to medicine, etc.

I promise, everything I am doing is because I truly enjoy it!! No worries!! It's just that one of my activities that I really enjoy has no ties to me as a person, really. But I guess it doesn't really matter what adcoms will think, because I love it and I'm not going to stop! 🙂

I really agree with standing out. I can't fathom how being unique could be anything but a positive.
 
Class of 2019! My serious EC building will start with this summer. Probably gonna volunteer abroad, do an internship, volunteer at a hospital, take a job or something productive like that. What about you guys?

I'm not too sure about the summer, since it'll be a bit stacked from other things. Once finals are over, the MDPA club at my college is going to four different med schools in Texas in a span of three days - woo, road trip! - so I'm probably going to do that. Then sometime in June my boyfriend and I are taking a trip to NYC to visit my family, and then when we come back we'll be doing some apartment hunting.

I'd like to continue my volunteering, but other than that, my summer will be stocked full of other things.

Where are you planning to go abroad?

I'l probably take some classes, continue volunteering, hope to get a job as a scribe:xf:

I want to get a position in a research lab as well...

A program I'm applying to lets volunteers help out in local eye clinics in rural areas, which sounds pretty interesting. Yes, it's legit, not one of those traps. Hopefully I get accepted!

I have been hired to work fulltime (paid, too!) at a research lab conducting research on my own hypotheses. It sounds like an amazing opportunity, since they are letting me have so much freedom even though I have NO research experience. Also, I will get to shadow doctors in the field that I am interested in, sit in on clinical trials, see surgeries, and attend lab meetings with the entire department. I did not think I would like research or want to do much of it, but I think this is going to be a good experience 🙂 I might also see if I can teach swim lessons a few times a week and volunteer on weekends and such.

The bulk of my ECs are underway, though. I'm busy but I'm loving it!

I see you're also from Texas! I know it's a big state, but wow, how many 2019ers are from Texas?! It's crazy!! I, alas, am not. (I say this with much jealousy... It's cold pretty much everywhere else in the country and we don't have a) great and b) cheap medical schools.... Lucky ducks 🙂)

haha There ARE some disadvantages, at least from my point of view.

For one, I'm originally from NYC. I live now in one of the biggest metro areas, and we have NO public transportation. I have no license. Can you imagine how fun it is for me? :laugh:

Also, to become an in-state resident was hell. I moved to Texas in July of 2009. I applied to matriculate at my university for the Fall of 2010. Lived in Texas for a year, not considered a resident. Why? I hadn't worked full time for a year, and had nothing in my name sans for a bank account. I pleaded and pleaded, tried to find loopholes, etc. They wouldn't budge. I paid out of state tuition for a full academic year, plus the summer I went abroad (it was $1800 for in state students to pay for the tuition, $3500 for me). I just got in-state tuition this past fall semester.

Yikes! That sounds unfortunate! ): I'm glad that you were able to get instate tuition now, though! 🙂

Plus, aren't Texas state schools HUGE? I go to a small liberal arts college, so that would just terrify me. Big classes = not my thing...
 
Yup, we're really fortunate to live in Texas as pre-meds! However, I'll move out of here as soon as I can; going to the North!

Well, as a Russian major - our department is very small; we barely meet our quota of 25 graduates every 5 years - so the classes are small and there's more room for better learning. In my science classes, though, there are a ton of students. I just sit in the front, since I'm blind, and do my own thing.

Preferably Northeast. Can't handle the weather down here! And the lack of ice hokey. But it's nice for the most part.

I think only rich families do that kind of thing. I have many friends in Texas who are female.. none of them have ever done that. People in the North have the debutante thing, too.

The thing to remember about Texas is that it isn't how people always perceive it. I've never come in contact with a cowboy, traffic doesn't stop to let cows cross the road, etc. However, there is one funny tip I've learned.. when someone says, "I'll tell you what!" don't expect anything else out of that sentence. That's all they'll say. :laugh:

Yeah! Okay, hahaha. Sorry for the stereotypes! I really don't know much about Texas other than that it has good med schools and that Jim Parsons (aka my favourite person ever) came from there. In fact, I don't really know much about the middle of the country in general. I should probably do more research.

Gotcha. Do those things happen in the more rural parts of Texas, or not at all? And haha! I've never heard that one. That's funny!

Probably not in the rural parts, but definitely in the more super-upscale, old money neighborhoods of Houston, Dallas and Austin.

*On that note, the Family Practice doc wants me to meet her at a hospital from 8pm to midnight. 😵

Taking a midterm. Spring break starts on Friday, and for some odd reason my chemistry lab mid term is on that Saturday. I mean, WTF.
 
Besides sleep, my scribe job is finally starting this week. That'll probably be fun. And I'm probably going to have to study in advance for classes (because scribing for 22 hrs/week plus volunteering plus tutoring plus 15 credits is going to be a big load).

My spring break starts today thank godddddddddddd. Two full weeks of R&R. I don't have any money to travel anywhere, so I'm mostly just gonna stay on campus and do some shadowing + start my lab position. I'm really happy with how this semester has been going for me so far. I had a rude awakening last semester, but it looks like I've gotten myself together.

Depends, we're technically the last batch to take the old (current) MCAT. But if we decide to hold off on the mcat for another year, then we take the 2015 one.

So if we apply the traditional way (taking the MCAT before senior year) then we take the current (old) one.
 
Thanks for the clarification.
I was getting really stressed out because of the uncertainty.
My current plan: I have a 1.5 month break in between Fall and Spring semester. I plan on studying for the MCAT during that time in junior year. Then take it right when Spring semester begins. That would leave me room to take it once more in the summer of Junior year.
What do you guys think about this?
