I agree with one of the above posters -- I find the whole blonde hair, blue eyes thing boring. Sure, she's pretty, but she looks exactly like 239057209582 other blonde hair, blue eyed pretty people (IMHO).

I guess I might be biased cause I'm not really a huge fan of blonde hair, in guys or girls. Hmm.

I shall use the Sunflower18 Theorem for my future references. 👍

I'm a straight girl who appreciates female beauty but don't see the mass appeal of blondes...

Nah, holding that opinion doesn't make you a hipster. But complaining about other people's taste in women and pointing it out does make you a hipster 🙂

So if I'm pointing it out because I have that opinion, what does that make me? Hipster or not, bro?

Oh dear lawd.

More annoyed at you dismissing criticism of problematic beauty standards as some kind of trend. I get enough bombardment with chicks like that every day in the media; don't need to see it on a medical forum of all places too.

I am deeply sorry. Guys... Let's get this Class of 2019 thread back to serious discussion.

I was recently at Starbucks (drinking a mocca frappa tangerine latte) and I read an article in the New Yorker about how the price of candle wax in eastern europe was affected by the 1840s Gold Rush. Very interesting stuff if I do say so myself. Thoughts? Ladies and gents?

I think my tastebuds would fall off if I had a mocha frappe tangerine latte. I'm glad that you are a future doctor, not a future Starbucks drink designer 👍

That reminds me of something one of my friends told me that was in a book she read (really direct source, I know) about how feathers used to be super expensive and sought after, so this tribe in Africa went searching for a rare bird to kill so they could bring back its feathers and make a fortune. They were gone for several months and a bunch of the tribe members died of starvation and exhaustion and all that, but they ended up finding and killing the bird and taking its feathers. BUT, when they got back, they found out that buying and selling feathers had become illegal while they were gone. So they spent all this time for no reward, and were now being charged as criminals for poaching and such. Very interesting. I'd probably have more details if I had read the book myself, but hey. This is the best I got.

Wow, that's really ironic.

Well that conversation didn't get very far. Anyone read any good books lately?

(Packing for school = bored = excessive SDNing)

I'm reading Plastic Fantastic right now, pretty interesting stuff. It's non-fiction though.

"Highly regarded science journalist Eugenie Samuel Reich recounts the case of wunderkind physicist Jan Hendrik Schön, who faked the discovery of a new superconductor at the world famous Bell Laboratories. Many of the world’s top scientific journals and experts, including Nobel Prize-Winners, supported Schön, only to learn that they were the victims of the biggest fraud in science. What drove Schön, by all accounts a mild-mannered, modest, and obliging young man, to tell such outrageous lies? Reich dives into the riveting world of science to examine how fraud perpetuates itself today. Schön’s rise and fall will be an essential and fascinating account of the missteps of the scientific community for years to come. "

What about you?

Whooooaaa that sounds super cool!! I'll have to add that to my list!! I almost exclusively read non-fiction, so that is right up my alley.

I just finished re-reading Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and Phantoms in the Brain -- both excellent non-fiction books. I'm about to start Alaska Bush Pilot Doctor, too. I wish I had more time to read -- I feel like I can't justify reading when I should be studying or doing ECs or sleeping. Which makes me sad, because I used to read voraciously all the time. I first declared as an English major. Alas, no longer.

Wow that sounds really interesting to read about. I wish I had time to read more as well.. I've never read a ton but I wish I had so my reading speed would be faster 😛

I could never be an English major. Writing a good paper takes me forever, it just seems like so much work to me. I'll stick with math/physics

Yeah, I'm excited! My brother is a pilot and I have relatives in Alaska, so I feel like this might help me relate to all of them on some level.

Luckily, I can read and write really fast. English, books, grammar, writing, reading, spelling, punctuation, etc. were my first loves -- science came later. Math has yet to arrive in a positive light to me, but hey, maybe that'll change this semester. But I do know what you mean; papers can suck. I think the most frustrating thing to me about the English courses I took was how subjective they were. In my science and math courses, you earned your grades by getting a certain amount of points on assignments, and those parameters were very clear -- miss a question, lose a point. Straightforward. But essays and class discussions and opinions can't be graded that way, and it drove me nuts! I couldn't figure out how to produce what the professor wanted, and what one professor liked another wouldn't, and argh! It was so frustrating and seemed really ineffective. My only A- to date 😡

Oh yeah. I've taken one English class at my university (I'll probably take one more) so far and the grading was beyond subjective. Luckily the class size was really small and my professor would let us rewrite two papers so I would go into his office hours to ask him what was wrong with my papers. I can see how some people would enjoy it because of the creativity aspects and really researching a specific news topic in depth but meh, it isn't for me.

I'm glad it's not just my university!! Your class sounded a bit more chill than mine (no retakes allowed!), so maybe I just picked my professor wrong, haha. Eh, what's done is done! One grade ain't gonna sink me 🙂

When do classes start up for you?

Monday at 9 🙂

My sleep schedule is so screwed up so that should be interesting. I assume you start on Monday too since you're packing?

Indeed. I waited until today to do my laundry, and I leave tomorrow. Very typical.

Luckily I was working over break, so while my sleep schedule is a bit odd, I have at least woken up early about half of the days this break. On the other hand, I napped in the afternoon on all of those days.. Which I will no longer have time to do... Which is a total bummer because naps are pretty much the best things to ever exist 😴👍

I have a friend who goes to school in New York, and she doesn't start until like, the last day of January or the first of February or something crazy.

I start tomorrow morning at 8... I have a wonderful MWF 8AM with Physics II....this semester is awesome! :lame:

But I have had to be here since Friday since I'm an RA. That's something else that takes a bunch of time, but I hope will help my application!!!

Tomorrow at 10:30 with Spanish for me. My earliest class is Cell Biology Tuesdays/Thursdays at 9AM 🙁 That's gonna suuuuck.

Yikes 8am classes suck 🙁

That's really cool that you're an RA though! How much time does that take up?

To catch up to speed with this thread:

I thought you were a guy from your other post... 😳

can't win them all

Well that conversation didn't get very far. Anyone read any good books lately?

I am currently reading Stephen Colbert's book "America Again: Re-becoming the Greatness We Never Weren't." It's hilarious, as all his stuff are.

Phew, I'm disqualified 🙂

👍 same here, girl

On another note, I feel like I start school very late. For me, classes don't start until the 28th!

Oh my gosh!!! That's crazy late! When do you get out, then?

8am classes... never again.

👍

After being forced to take a 9am class fall of freshman year, I swore to never take an early morning class ever again. So far I have succeed. Since then, the earliest class I've taken was at 11am. 😎
