Good luck to y'all starting your courses! (Especially those on their last semester!)

I start on the 22nd... and then take the MCAT immediately after my first day. Kind of terrified at the moment. O___O
 
Kind of late posting to this thread, but will be applying to med school with you guys in a couple of months.

Talk about cray-cray...

Only 18.5, but rougher than any 20credit term I've taken:
Communications (Public Speaking)
Scientific Data Analysis 2 (Stats for bio majors...mad easy)
Software Skills for Chemists (harsh grading scheme, no curves)
Mol/Symm and Point Group Theory (easy inorganic class)
P-chem lab (4hours, Writing Intensive)
Analytical Lab (4hours + always goes over, Writing Intensive x2)

Our "Plan of Study" recommended the two WI labs in the same term...What a mistake. Just the shear time commitments to all my checkboxes makes it difficult to stay on top of all the work.

Has anyone been getting emails from any top-20 schools?! I just got one from Vanderbilt and
1) I was ecstatic! Even though it doesn't mean anything haha
and 2) confused about how they got my email

Can anyone shed some light?!

They get it through your MCAT score info I think.

I just got one from Vandy too, haha. I'd love to go there, that's for sure! But I think it's mass sent to everyone above a certain MCAT score.

I got the same email a couple of days ago. As others have already pointed out, it's probably a mass email. You probably gave consent for AAMC to share your email with med schools when you took the MCAT. Keep on the look out for more spam from medical schools.

What exactly is a writing intensive lab? And...you should tell your advisers to change that 😕

Hmm we have the same deal for ochem, but no abstracts... Just lab reports. You actually write abstracts for the experiments the textbooks have you do??

They're not textbook experiments. They're more like independent advanced research projects. It's an upper level advanced experimental chemistry class.

Yeah it is!! I'm in another advanced chemistry course focused on mastering scientific literacy, and being able to read, discuss, and present scientific journal articles in a sophisticated way. They are useful classes!

Lot to catch up on w/ this convo. All "pages" are single-spaced.

Writing Intensive classes are just what they sound like...you write. a lot. My bio writing intensive lab was set up so that we had 3 reports over the (10 week quarter system) term. Each of those reports was >20 pages; plus we had to keep a lab notebook and weekly quizzes + end of lab questions and all that crap. For this P-Chem lab it's about 6+pg report due every week [abstract, intro, . Nothing difficult, just time consuming.

Most of these labs have scripted protocols, but for the bio lab each week built off of your work from the previous week (transformation of a vector into E. coli) for about 7 weeks of the term. On the other hand, the Analytical Chem lab is like: create a calibration curve and determine the concentration of unknown XX using an AASpec, and we go make everything ourselves.

For graduation, we require 3 courses (quarter system) of WI. 2 of those courses must be in your major, 1 can be in whatever.

That all sounds like a pain. Aside from independent research, I'm not taking any science courses this semester.

There's like 10-15 people in my mcat thread that are like scoring 38's - 43's consistently.

That's crazy! I mean, that kind of score would be FANTASTIC, for sure. But I don't know. I got a 33, and I am hopeful that I might get in somewhere even though I don't have the MCAT score of a god. It'll probably be ok if you don't get 40 is all I'm sayin 🙂
 
38-43? Whaaat wow SDN really has the cream of the crop here. I'm sure you've prepared as much as you could and just have the test to look forward to, so just do it, rock the exam, and never worry about the MCAT again 😀

I totally agree with you. I would love to get a score that high but to be honest I could be pretty happy with a 32+. Btw a 33 is great score and with your GPA, you're golden. Your stats shouldn't keep you out of any school really. There are people in my mcat thread saying they would retake if they got a 34 or 35 :lame:

I guess so lol. My highest scores have been 34-37 on AAMC exams and 34-36 on TBR, TPR, and Gold standard exams. Then I come on here and everyone in my mcat thread has a 38-43 . But you right, I've done all I can to prepare and I'm going to do the best I can and never look back.

Yeah, retaking 32+ is ridiculous -- I would even have a hard time retaking a 30 or 31. But I'm sure that you will do GREAT if you have been scoring 34-37 on AAMC! That's so freaking awesome. You're gonna rock it. And then it'll be done! 🙂 What day is your test?

Well a 34-37 were my highest scores on the AAMC exams. A 34 twice, a 35, and a 37. The other scores on the AAMC exams were between a 29-33. Thank you for the vote of confidence though, I really appreciate that 🙂 My test is on Saturday.
 
A huge component of acing the test is having the right mindset. You've done all you can now. Just make sure you keep a clear head and rock it on test day!

Those are still awesome scores. If you can pull those out on the practice tests, you could totally do it on the real deal!! I remember that I was steadily going up, and then all of a sudden two weeks before my test date, my scores plummeted -- on AAMC 8 or 9, I scored a 29 after consistent 34s, and I totally freaked out. But then I just decided to relax and calm down because there honestly wasn't anything that could be done at that point, and I got my average! I think that, for most people, the adrenaline pushes you to do your average or better than your average. Maybe not if the test plays on all your weaknesses, but that is unlikely. @Person0715 is right -- mindset is huge. But don't freak out if you can't stop from freaking out, either.... haha.

I took the day before my test completely off (well, almost -- I reviewed all of my notes once in the morning and once before bed), and am really happy I did that.
 
Whaddup brahs! Class of 2019er here. Currently studying for my MCAT which is on April 24th. Everything else is lined up, just gotta knock this test out once and for all.

Is anyone else currently studying for the MCAT? Seems as though the majority of people in this thread have taken it already.
