Whaddup brahs! Class of 2019er here. Currently studying for my MCAT which is on April 24th. Everything else is lined up, just gotta knock this test out once and for all.

Is anyone else currently studying for the MCAT? Seems as though the majority of people in this thread have taken it already.
:welcome: taking it this saturday

Welcome!
I'm still preparing 🙂 My test date is May 17th (why it's so late, idk. I derp'ed, and don't want to pay 65$ to reschedule).

Why thank you. Nice, I doubt you're late though, considering you'll be turning in your app in June. How are you prepping for the MCAT? I'm taking a Princeton course that starts tomorrow. For the past 2-3 weeks, I've just been pre-reading and working on my personal statement/pre-writing secondaries to some schools I plan on applying to. Hopefully it'll make the application process considerably smoother.

I'm studying on my own from the Kaplan "MCAT Premier" and Princeton "Cracking the MCAT" and just taking practice exams! Wow pre-writing secondaries is pretty intense...I think starting on the personal statement gives plenty of time for more thought and reflection 🙂 We're setting up a PS exchange closer to application date for 2019-ers who would like some extra eyes on it.

I'm lost. Current app cycle = 2013-2014 (2014 matriculating). Class of 2019 is the next app cycle?
wait i think i confused myself. I am submitting the app this coming fall, 2014. So if I get in, il matriculate 2015. so class of 2019

Gotchaa. I've been working on my PS / ECs too 🙂 It's nice to know there are 5+ months to go before it really needs to be done, so there's plenty of time to think about it.

Right now in a geography class where the prof spent the last 10 minutes explaining difference between mortality rate and case fatality ratio :l fml

that sounds splendid and so much fun...hahahahhahah NOT. I am working on those as well. I have 11 so far and they aren't easy lol

I think I missed something. I'm confused. Hahaha oh well.

I'm trying to decide if I should cut back on my ECs this semester or if it'd look weird to pull back on the reins this close to app time.

I think if you have enough under your belt (say 1.5years+) clinical/non-clinical/fun-time ECs, it would be a reasonable assumption that you had to drop 1 for school/other time commitments. But if you're like me and barely have the hours, it's probably best in the long run to tough it out.

I've certainly been feeling my share of time constraints as well. The classes aren't even hard, I just don't have enough hours in the day to do all the work and keep my sanity. Plus I just got addicted to a new game...which isn't helping my already non-existent focus. I had a rough draft on the PS from over winter break, but doubt I'll have time to improve it much this term. I guess I'll have to p
put it off to spring term.

EDIT: On the plus side, snow day!!!

I strongly concur with @nOchemallday. It seems that you have been very involved with school extracurriculars and other community volunteering opportunities since you have started college. I don't think it will be a big deal if you scale back a bit right now. Will you still be doing any volunteering at all this semester?

“Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional.” Your semester sounds rough but you are nOchemallday! Academically, you kick a** and you are going to do it again this semester. Predicting straight A’s and an awesome personal statement from you despite the limited hours this term. Remember I called it first.🙂

PS: does a snow day mean no school? lol

Thanks for the motivation!

Yea, all classes after noon were canelled university-wide. We had like 4 inches of snow on the ground by 11. All the sidewalks were covered and the streets were even worse, getting really icy. It's still snowing now at 6pm and I'm pretty sure it's going to continue to snow into tomorrow morning...so I anticipate a delayed openning if not another cancelled day tomorrow.

EDIT: Enjoying my 4 day weekend though!

You lucky dancing banana! I had a fog day: traffic x2 so commute was forever. :yeahright:

How would schools be able to tell if you'd cut back from, say, 10 h/wk to 3 h/wk for just this semester?

:banana:x2!!!! 5 day weekend!! Let's hope this doesn't last too long though, idk what would happen if they cancelled the whole week of classes. Supposed to be sunny for the rest of the week, but temp only in the low 20s. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

What is that? Lol. Congrats!

Thanks! I'm being paranoid and want to make sure everything is ready to go when application opens in May. Sigh, SDN syndrome.

Interfolio is pretty much a service that stores LOR's. Comes in handy because instead of asking for letters in May and possibly have LOR's delay my app, (can't submit LOR's till application opens) I'll have it sitting pretty on Interfolio and I'll just transfer it to AMCAS.

Oh that is cool!

Good luck on the MCAT everyone! 🙂

I was supposed to do a lot of work over the long weekend but instead slept a lot and watched Netflix. 🙁

2 LOR's down, 1 to go! Is anyone else here using Interfolio to store their LOR's?
I'm using interfolio! It's really nice to be able to grab LORs ahead of time. One of my peeps has been working on it (procrastinating) for 2 months...good thing I asked early??

Oof a whole week off sounds like a lot of making up to do D: Do your profs post video lectures?

Long weekend is time to relax...enjoy the break!! Though we just came from winter break hahahah

you have got to watch the Black list. hahahha it is good...

Also how does one sign up for inter folio thing?

Ooh I'll check it out! I don't think I've ever finished an entire TV series... always drop off halfway.

http://www.interfolio.com/
It's membership based so you can purchase membership for 1 year or 3 years. Basically your letter writers send letters (digital or physical) to interfolio and they are stored under your account, and then you can send those to whoever /whatever you need to send rec letters to as long as your membership lasts.

Oh ok, I did not know that. That sounds convenient.Ya black list is good...i like it a lot.

Wait but doesn't each LoR has a unique ID number for AAMC?

Uh oh...so much for doing work today! 🙄

You add the ID number in when you submit from Interfolio to AMCAS. It doesn't actually need to be inside the letter. You don't get a number until AMCAS opens for our cycle anyways 🙁

oh wow, ok I see what you are saying, so basically upload the LORs and then tag the ID...wow cool. Check it out and uyou shall like it

Thanks guys! That's reassuring.

EDIT: Whoa, it cut out a bunch of what I typed originally. Which was.....
Jealous to the snow day thing!!! It doesn't snow very often here 🙁 And to someone else, yes I'm planning on using interfolio.

Thanks a bunch @nOchemallday! I think everyone is ready to put this test behind them.

Hope you guys are having an excellent week! May many more snow days come your way (but please stay warm)!

Just made some guacamole instead of brushing up on m-kitty crap. No regrets.

Anybody else waking up saying random formulas or random medical s**t that makes no sense?! It's been going on for a couple of weeks and it's kinda frightening to be quite frank. 😱😱😱

Hey everyone,

I have a question in regards to the timing of LORs. I'm planning to ask prospective letter writers some time after March (post-MCAT) and am wondering how many weeks I should give for them to submit to Interfolio? Does 3 weeks sound reasonable to you guys, or should it be more? And if worst scenario happens and they don't submit it by the time I submit my AMCAS app (planning for 06/08 submission), is there a deadline I'd need to meet so that my application won't fall behind in becoming verified/complete?

Thanks!

I would say give them a month...if you ask them at the start of April, say that you need it by May. Also that time is when a lot of grants updates are due (and taxes! lol) so they'll be super swamped.
Judging from last year's apps it seems like AMCAS takes 2-3 weeks to verify, so if you submit 6/8 you could add in your LORs from Interfolio as late as 6/22 without affecting your application completion. (It all depends on how long to verify though.) Can I ask why 6/8?

@LabratABQ @dechristine What shows are you guys following? 🙂 Looking for good procrastination material heheh

The West Wing should take you a while... I'm also currently following Psych, The Mentalist, The Big Bang Theory, The Good Wife, NCIS... I used to watch Suits and Bones but I feel like both have gone downhill. (Also, CBS is the only network that still has shows up online for free)

6/8 is really just a deadline I set for myself.
