Congrats how awesome. Any advice for the upcoming cycle?

Thanks!

Hmm, I can think of a few tips:

Primary Application:
-If you haven't already done so, start requesting your LORs as soon as possible to avoid delays.

-Do not half-ass your personal statement. I think I edited/revised mine about 20-30 times before being truly satisfied with the final version. 😱 Get feedback from others early on, so you have time to develop a strong personal statement.

-Start researching schools over Spring Break or whenever you have some free time to develop your school list--this helps you avoid wasting money applying to schools that are not OOS-friendly or very mission-specific. Now you're wondering if I made this mistake, amirite?

-Submit your primary app on DAY ONE! AMCAS really dropped the ball this past cycle with verifications. 🙄

-Be sure to request your transcript(s) early and enter your coursework in AMCAS very carefully to avoid verification delays.

Secondary Applications:
-Consider pre-writing some of your secondaries if you have the time.

-Be efficient when working on secondaries--more often than not, you don't need an entirely new essay for every single prompt (just tweak and tailor your responses to each school's mission and values). And for the love of god, people...PROOFREAD! 😛

-KEEP YOURSELF BUSY! The application cycle is a whole lot of waiting--if you keep yourself busy, trust me, it'll be less painful.

Interviews:
-A suit is absolutely required! I totally felt like a flight attendant in mine.

-Briefly re-familiarize yourself with the school's mission/values and any unique programs or aspects before each interview so you have talking points when they ask you "Why do you want to attend our school?" <--- Oh, and they will! :heckyeah:

-Eye contact, smile, and be polite (duh!). 😉

------
At every single interview I attended, at least one interviewer mentioned how they were moved by my personal statement and/or secondary essays. I have some free time until school starts in August, so if anyone wants feedback on their personal statement, I'd be more than happy to help. 🙂

Good luck! :luck:

@Docility thank you! that was helpful. :claps:

Now I am sure I can read this up, can you submit your AMCAS on day one without having the MCAT score? I am taking it in May.

Yes, you can click a thing that says 'still waiting on MCAT'. You don't need a score to have your app verified, but will obviously need it to have your app considered complete at schools.

Yep, you sure can! I took my MCAT in mid-May last year, submitted my AMCAS application on day one, and once my score was released it was automatically uploaded to my AMCAS application. 👍

EDIT: @Oso beat me to it! 😛

I thought you have said this somewhere but I wasnt entirely sure. So basically I can submit everything and they can still verify it without having my MCAT score. Then after I have gotten the score back, how much longer does it take for them to send the to desired schools?

I see, automatically uploads the score doesnt mean the AMCAS will be automatically sent out right?

When you submit the primary, you indicate which schools you want AMCAS to send it to. Schools will have access to everything in the app, including MCAT scores once they're uploaded.

Hi @Docility !!! Great post earlier with all the tips!

I see, but then what if you have gotten the score that is less than desirable and you want to retake the test, then will the school think that whatever they see, as in the first test score is what you wanted them to see rather than the second score?

Thanks!

Thank you for dropping by to give us some great advice! Wish you the best with med school 🙂

I'm pretty sure you can update your application to indicate that you are retaking the MCAT. Right, @Oso? Where's a bear when you need one?! 😛

I also believe that AMCAS will release your application to the schools you've selected once your first MCAT score is available and your application is verified.

Hmm... well I'm not exactly sure, but I would imagine that once your first set of scores are uploaded, you could check the thing that says 'still waiting on score' to show that you will be retaking. That probably means schools won't evaluate your app until the new score comes in. Again, this is all conjecture on my part. Should this come up I'm sure you could find an answer on SDN. Hopefully you won't have to retake and worry about this though.

Gracias, @Oso! 🙂

My advice: DON'T plan for a retake right now. Study as if this is your one and only shot, and let your practice scores determine if you should push your test date back. Good luck! :luck:

I am not, I took it a while back and got a less than desirable score and thought I wasnt going to go to med school, now that I rethink about it, and I wanted to go. So that is why I am asking. I dont want them to see that practice trial one.

Thank you!

Unfortunately, schools will see each MCAT you take. So definitely study hard and only take the test when you're fully prepared. If it helps, come hang out in the MCAT forum. You'll see me answering strategy and content related questions!

What I meant is consider that one score. Rather than the new one that I'll be submitting.

Well, they will 'consider' it to some extent. It doesn't look great to take the MCAT more than once. But if you do well the second time and you have a solid app then it won't matter much. SO, don't worry about this now, just study hard and good luck!

Note that I have absolutely no idea what's going on in this thread or what @Agent B is talking about. But wait, @Agent B , which class thread do you really belong to? I'm technically 2018 but may take a year off to do dual degree/research so could be c/o 2019. And I think Labrat and Turayzazaza are neat.

What do you mean by technically? As in you're in the app cycle now....but you might take 5 years to finish? What dual degree program are you thinking of?

@LabratABQ @Agent B
I like everyone
Don't think I count as feisty. What does that even mean.. and @sunflower18 and @silverturtle disappeared 🙁

Yes, really into md/mph (but I may also do a 4 year combined program)

Also, when you leave us for a while ... @LabratABQ and @Agent B start to get kind of .... personal ... and weird 😵

Lastly, I'm sending you good vibes for your p-chem test :nailbiting:

Ooh I'm really interested in pursuing an MD/MPH too!! That's awesome :3
Thanks...I'll need the vibes :hungover:

Ok, stupid question here. What do you do with Md/MpH? sorry just stupid

MD: clinical, research
MPH: advocacy, patient programs, government stuff

usually MD/MPH will be clinical + some sort of community outreach program development. An MPH isn't strictly necessary to do the advocacy and program design but it's really good training.

A lot of existing MD/MPHs went back for an MPH after practicing medicine for a while. The popularity has led to MD/MPH joint programs increasing....as far as I know.
