Sorry for the late response. I was feeling tipsy so I refrained from posting stuff. After I got the call at work--I attended a champagne, chocolate and caramel tasting class. My friends at work and I ended up drinking all the left over fancy pants champagne to celebrate.
Very happy and honored to share good moments today with several of you.

I've been nervous to try any champagnes lol. I really don't like most wines... well I don't like dry wines, that's for sure. Are there sweet champagnes?

Yes, but honestly I love vinho verde. It's a portuguese white that is slightly tart and slightly bubbly. Stuff is awesome.

Sweet champagne is gross. Might as well be drinking a rose at that point...

well idk because I think I've had champagne like twice, but I just don't like dry wine AT ALL so I figured I wouldn't like dry champagne either.

The dryness of champagne goes well with flavorful stuff. We had them with tons of caramel and chocolate truffle and it worked great.

This is probably a silly question, but on FAFSA for Question 74 (How many people in your parents' household will be college students between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016? Do not include your parents.) do we include ourselves?

I thought that since medical school is considered a graduate/professional school, we aren't classified as college students but it won't let me proceed with 0. I'm assuming we're expected to count ourselves (even though we won't technically be in college?)

Yeah I just counted myself.

Yes, always count yourself.

why do we put in parents info if they wont' be supporting us?

Mooper scooper got my vote too.
Btw can anyone tell me why people say "brownie points"?

Y'know, even as a native English speaker, I don't even have the vaguest idea myself. Have to google this. Here's a link explaining the origin.
I thought you said samosa and i got excited.

#brownpeopleproblems

I just had this very same conversation with my friend (who is Nepali) this morning. I brought in a box of Samoas and she was visibly disappointed.

Though I think we can all agree that Samoas, Thin Mints, and Tagalongs are the holy trinity of Girl Scout cookiedom.

Found this on UPenn's website:

"If financial aid awards were based only on the resources of students, without taking parental resources into consideration, the needs of students from more affluent families would likely be equivalent to the needs of students from more disadvantaged backgrounds. And because the total amount available for annual scholarships is finite, eliminating parental resources from the financial aid formula would result in sharply diminished scholarship support for students with the greatest real need. This in turn would inevitably reduce the School's ability to attract a diverse and talented student body."

hmm, I guess if those affluent families did that and got audited they'd be screwed but I guess it makes sense. just annoying because my mom never knows any of the numbers that the FAFSA asks for and makes it seem like a big deal lol.

She probably had to put them in for undergrad unless she paid full sticker price.

I didn't get any government aid, just scholarships for football and from my church, and yeah we've done this before and I dread it every year because it's the same song and dance every year.

basically I just want to be independent when it comes to the FAFSA and taxes lol. its' because she can't keep an organized file folder to save her life.

Doesn't she do her taxes (or have someone do them?). All the info should be there.

yeah she does, but she either loses the papers, doesn't keep them, etc. it's just annoying. i'll just have to tell her now and wait until she gets around to it.

Totally get you with that. I didn't know the finaid process would be so drawn-out. 🙁

My parents only had one W-2 to file, so I did their taxes for them. 😉 Removed a lot of the stress on my end, but now my parents are wondering if I can do next year's taxes for them...

WELL WHY NOT
Next thing you know screw med school, H&R Block is just on the horizon yo

Just wanted to give a quick shoutout to everyone who has been contributing info to the Med Schools: In Summary project! School info has been growing, information has been refined, people have been linking their sources, and most everyone has refrained from regurgitating US News's subscription-based numbers. YAY! Give yourself a big, hearty pat on the back. You rock. Go buy yourself a beer/non-alcoholic beverage of choice, you clever SDNer, you.

Shameless plug, but as everyone's cycle winds down (and as app-related information slowly begins to ebb away from your memory) it'd be awesome if you could throw some info regarding your soon-to-be school up on the list! The end goal is to produce a living document which can be altered as application requirements and school policies change. Hopefully we'll be able to reduce some of the redundancy and curb the spread of misinformation in the school-specific application threads.

how quickly does the FAFSA **need** to be filed for us?

Before your school-specific priority deadline, I think? Some of my schools have April as their deadline... others have March... one (Northwestern) even had their deadline in February. You can probably submit it past the priority deadline, but it's recommended to do so sooner just in case your school has a "first come first serve" approach towards their $$free money$$.

Submitted need access and fafsa this week. I was so excited until I realized that I still have to mail tax returns to all these schools 🙁
