Submitted need access and fafsa this week. I was so excited until I realized that I still have to mail tax returns to all these schools 🙁
All these schools.😏
#firstworldproblem
#toomanyacceptances

But yeah. Can't believe that just yesterday I wrote secondaries for each and every of these schools.

Ugh ugh need to submit FAFSA and NeedAccess... I'm so behind aaaargh. And one of my employers from last year did not in fact send me a W2 so I need to get on the phone ASAP and figure that out so I can submit it.

I filed my taxes, but haven't touched FAFSA etc yet...

I was sent an incorrect form, and was told a week ago they'd let me know when they send the correct one. Of course I haven't heard anything, so I can't do my taxes or the FAFSA yet. One of my schools needs it by March 1, so I'm panicking a bit...

I think you can do the FAFSA with estimated tax info just to get it submitted, and then edit it later once you actually file your taxes. Can anyone else confirm this?

It depends on the school.

Yep, ask the school. One of my schools said to only file with estimated info if I couldn't get the numbers I needed before 2/28. Not sure about others.

Sorry to derail a bit, but finally accepted two days ago and I'm still not sure if this is real life.

@ridethecliche I'm still pulling all the way for you to get that II at Jefferson!

Now to start FAFSA, and plan that cross-country road-trip of debauchery that my friends and I have always dreamed of.

PS: +1 for @moop er Scooper.

Just wanted to give a quick shoutout to everyone who has been contributing info to the Med Schools: In Summary project! School info has been growing, information has been refined, people have been linking their sources, and most everyone has refrained from regurgitating US News's subscription-based numbers. YAY! Give yourself a big, hearty pat on the back. You rock. Go buy yourself a beer/non-alcoholic beverage of choice, you clever SDNer, you.

Shameless plug, but as everyone's cycle winds down (and as app-related information slowly begins to ebb away from your memory) it'd be awesome if you could throw some info regarding your soon-to-be school up on the list! The end goal is to produce a living document which can be altered as application requirements and school policies change. Hopefully we'll be able to reduce some of the redundancy and curb the spread of misinformation in the school-specific application threads.
Yes! There is lots of information there that can hopefully help the Class of 2020 (and beyond) create a school list, know what to expect at an interview, and learn more about what gives a med school its identity.

Recently I have been helping a friend create a school list, and I keep thinking how great it would be to have a similar document for DO schools. I don't feel qualified to create one, but would love to see one spring up. Pipe dream?

Why are you being moopy scoopy about this? 😀

One of my parents is self-employed. Apparently that makes doing taxes much more difficult. Still waiting on her information. 🙁

Welp, UMass started admitting people from my interview date. Guess I didn't make the 'superstar' cut...

This is probably a silly question, but on FAFSA for Question 74 (How many people in your parents' household will be college students between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016? Do not include your parents.) do we include ourselves?

I thought that since medical school is considered a graduate/professional school, we aren't classified as college students but it won't let me proceed with 0. I'm assuming we're expected to count ourselves (even though we won't technically be in college?)

There's a question number 74?? There's 74+ questions???

These fasfa people are gonna know more about my life than my parents do! 😳

Applying to internships in hospitals is so hard when you're a physics major and all of the internships "require" biology/chemistry/neuroscience majors. :depressed: From my resume I think it's pretty clear that I'm premed but I'm not sure if it'll make it that far :/

Mass admits superstars? o.o Not that it's a bad school, but I wouldn't expect it to care about superstars..

Why do you want to intern at a hospital? Most of them don't offer work that's all that interesting..

To get clinical exposure and hopefully find some doctors to shadow! Some of the available internships sound cool, like working with autistic children and sleep studies. I'll hopefully find one that's more research based than administrative based. I already completed an internship at a large R&D company so I'm looking for something new!

Got my fafsa filed... I had to estimate my income since I worked full time after graduation unlike 2012 so I couldn't use those numbers.

I feel like it might have been an error based on formatting but it said my estimated contribution was something like 00836. U think that's an error or am I expected to contribute that much? Its the 0s throwing me off.

How do you convert the number they give you to what your estimated contribution is?

errr they gave me an estimated contribution i thought at the end.

yup they did. and they sent me an email with it:

Mine's like 11k because I had a job this year.

Yeah, thanks fafsa, I'm expected to pay my entire life's savings in my first year. GG.

I'm in a similar boat. However, I've spoken to people who said their school's calculated ESC (estimated student contribution) was radically different from the FAFSA's ESC.

I'm extremely grateful to have held a well-paying gap year job... but the whole point was that it was a gap year job. This income disappears when I matriculate. But it's all good – I was very lucky not to have had to go into debt for my application cycle. Bring on the loans...

I had a job june-december that paid $16/hr so I expected to have a higher contribution. However I only have about 5k in savings so maybe that is why? Jeeze this cycle was expensive

So the lesson is to remain close to the poverty line when applying.

Anyway, Happy Singles Awareness Day!!!

Woah woah. FAFSA will generate an EFC based on your gap year job...? Merp does anyone know if schools adjust this back down on their end? If everything goes well I'll make >$55k + OT next year. Am I screwed?????

I'll report back once I get formal finaid packages from schools, but I believe they do adjustments... the whole part of filing these forms was to include how much money I'd make prior to matriculation (the final bit of my gap-year job) and how much I'd be making during the academic year ($0). They must use that data – even if it's just self-reported – for something?

I think also you can ask to have schools re-evaluate your finaid packages as you approach MS2, MS3, etc. if there are major financial changes on either your end or your parents'. At least in my case I'll have a sibling entering college, so I definitely want to get in on that EFC reduction.

tl;dr: do as you'd always do. Try to find a gap year job that pays a living wage and is enjoyable. As far as I know, you can't "game" the finaid system. If you don't want a high paying job there are THOUSANDS of other premeds at minimum wage/unemployed who will gladly take it in your stead. 😉

Hey C/O 2019'ers! How is everyone? Anyone here an HPSP applicant who has either received the scholarship or are waiting for the next board?

Yeah I know fin aid is generally reevaluated every year. I'm not gonna turn down a great gap year job out of fear of FA lol. Also, I doubt the average premed is after the kind of positions I've been looking at, but the point is well taken 😛

Many school (WashU and Stanford come to mind) will simply ignore the portion of your last year's income that are wage. This means that if you don't have a trust fund set up for you, your gap year's income won't be treated as if it's a continued income in your 2015. Even if it's considered by school like Pitt, you can petition to argue that you won't be making the same kind of money once you are in school and you generally win. And yes, the school will reevaluate your need yearly. Although, an exception that I know of would be Pitt. Pitt will tell you how much they can give you in the next four years and the amount would be guaranteed unless you are calculated to need more.

Anyone in here going to be attending a VA school? Looking for future classmates. 😀

you guys get your parents info on the FAFSA already? Or do you add that in later? Mine are taking their sweet time with their taxes....

I was able to put all of my mother's info in before I submitted... but she's an accountant haha. If your parents are taking their sweet time, I'm pretty sure you can submit with estimations based on last year's tax info, and update/edit it later.

Also.... Without getting into too many details, my mom makes upper 5 figures per year, has ~mid 5 figures in the bank, and has mid 6s in retirement.

And I had a job for half the year that I made $16/hr and have mid 4 figures in the bank, and I came up with an estimated contribution of 800 dollars lol.

Idk what's going on with that.

They can't honestly expect my mom to dip into her retirement can they?

Grad school loans are more your responsibility than hers do the additional cost is going to you.

The efc I believe is used to estimate how much parents could potentially contribute so that students that can't afford to come might have a shot. I don't think this works like college. You should call a schools finaid dept to see what they say.

Ya I'm just really confused on if the EFC they gave me is an error (because there are three 0s before the 800 number) or what is going on. Lol ya I guess I'll call my school.

So will I have the chance to take out loans to fully cover COA regardless of EFC?

I don't think retirement accounts are allowed to be factored in when considering loans?
