Hey guys-

What do people think is more helpful to take in preparation for med school-

Microbiology or Genetics?

I know the answer is probably both, but I just thought I'd ask...

I took both this semester actually. There is a little overlap between the two, or maybe just for me because I had the same teacher for both. In medical school, I would say microbio. because you learn a lot of neat lab skills like staining, aseptic transfer, etc. Also, it has a real application to medicine because you study microorganisms that cause diseases, how they do so, etc. Genetics is more helpful for something like the MCAT. It is basically summed up in three areas-Mendelian (aka the peas), Molecular (DNA, cloning, etc.), and Population (genetic drift, etc.) Take both if you can, they are quite fun!🙂

Microbiology, of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I will admit I am biased. I LOVED Microbiology. I almost gave up my quest for med school to start my job as a Microbiologist at the lab doing all the anthrax testing.

As to your question... they are both equal for preparing for med school. Both classes are taught in either your 1st or 2nd year. I took both, but genetics was a required course at my school for bio majors.

I loved micro too amy!! micro is such a fun class i think, and it was the first time instead of dreading going to lab twice a week, i looked forward to it!
