Class rank and matching in surgery

I'm a first year medical student and am interested in surgery. I've had my first two final exams over the week and I'm very disappointed because although I've put my best effort forward, I barely cracked the class average. On a few of my midterm exams I was below average which definitely did not feel good.

I am curious to know how much weight your class rank holds with program directors. Would a high score on the USMLE make up for being just average?
