So I am applying this cycle but I am looking for ways to boast to my sGPA (2.91) in the event I do not get accepted to a school, which of course is a possibility, as it is the biggest weak point of my application. I am going to be scheduling classes for spring at the end of this month and I wanted to get an opinion on what route I should go with.

Right now I am planning on retaking genetics, which I got a C- last time. Then adding a neuroscience class, and a nutrition class that I need to take to graduate. What I am having a tough time deciding on is if I should retake Ochem II or not.
So,
Option 1 is retake Ochem II which I got a C in. (if i got an A and A's in the above classes my sGPA would go up to a 3.25ish)

Option 2 is don't retake and instead take an upper level micro bio course or immunology. (if i get an A and the upper level class is same amount of credits as Ochem my sGPA would be a 3.19ish)

So it is not a huge difference in the two new sGPA but what do you guys think would be more beneficial to me from the perspective of Adcoms- retaking and mastering a prerequisite or challenging myself and doing well in an upper level science class?? I tried to do a search on this but I couldn't find anything. Thanks for your insight.

From personal experience my vote is for retakes of everything C- if you have 120 ish credits or less.

Option 1. If you can add that micro bio course and manage the course load... do it.

Well the only C- I have is genetics which I am retaking for sure. I do have over 120 credits because I was supposed to graduate last August but I postponed it to spring 2013 to take more classes/do retakes. Unfortunately most of my grades are B- and C/C+ in my chems which is whats dragging my gpa down but my physics and bios are all Bs or higher. So I am kind of in a pickle as to what to retake.

Retake the C and C+ first. You need to get your gpa above 3.00 then you can worry about taking upper levels.

I would love to add the micro one but that would put me up to 15 semester credits plus I have to work 16-24 hours a week as a scribe. 12 credits plus working those hours would probably be plenty as is. I mean I think I could handle it but I don't want to risk doing average in my classes esp the retakes.

No doubt. Do well in the retakes 👍

Definitely underestimate the first semester. From there you can get a feel of how many hours you can handle. Personally I work 40 hours a week and 12 credits was rough because of having to get up early for class. The workload was definitely doable though.

Dang that would definitely be rough. Well right now is technically the first semester I am doing the retakes as I am retaking biochem and taking pharmacology and a STD patho class (think its 8 credits total). I am working 24-32 hours a week right now and I have A's in the pharma and the STD class but biochem it is too hard to tell due to how he will end up curving it but I did slightly above the average on the first exam and an A on the first quiz. If I end up getting all A's in those classes, my sGPA will be right above a 3.0.

But for spring semester the two chem's I'd be able to retake is Ochem II lecture (C) and then the other chem I could retake is Ochem lab II which i have a C+ in. So you think I should retake those two Ochems plus retake genetics and then I have to take that easy nutrition class as a requirement for my major to graduate. I would drop the neuro class then so that'd put me at 11 credits plus work but I think I would be able to handle that. Does that sound like a good plan of action??

In my experience, easy classes always end up being full of busy work. Busy work is your enemy. You know yourself best. Just remember that a 4 A semester is better than a 3 A and 2 B semester.

Ya that makes sense. i will keep that in mind. Unfortunately I have to take that 2 credit nutrition class to graduate in the spring due to the fact that my school went from quarters to semesters and somehow I don't have enough nutrition elective credits now even though I did to graduate under the quarters system. makes no sense but it is what it is. Thanks for the advice
