Are any of you guys worried about the amount of class you will miss due to interviews?

I may have to drop my lab class due to their strict attendance policy. If you miss one lab, you get a zero and once you miss two, you fail the class. They also do not allow any make up labs and do not let you attend lab a different day that week.

I don't understand why some schools interview only on Wednesdays...if you have to fly there, you are pretty much missing two to three days of classes.

Your thoughts?

I'm nervous about missing classes and work. I'm already slated to miss five work days and it's still early. I'm thinking of dropping down to 30 hours/week for the fall. The cut in pay will be a bummer, but at least I won't be scrambling for leave. For classes I plan on talking to the professors the first day and asking how flexible they will be. I don't mind coming in early to take exams or making up labs, but it is quite the juggling act!

I'd drop it after double checking with the lab coordinator that exemptions for interviews are not possible.

A school not making accommodations for their students applying to graduate school seems pretty ******ed.

That's what I thought too. I emailed the lab coordinator and they said they only excuse people for illness and university sporting events and if you are attending a conference related to your major. I was shocked that applying to med school was less important. The problem is that this is a class that sophomores usually take. I am hoping my upper division bio courses will be more flexible. Just another reason to hate organic chemistry lab!!

Seriously? Your university needs to get its priorities in check.

Schools (and thus professors) are actually required to excuse students for university sporting events, so it's not really about priorities.

Regardless, I think it's weird that a lab coordinator won't let you miss a lab for interviews. If I were you I would talk to your dean and/or pre-health adviser. Someone has to be able to do something about it.

Maybe I misunderstand, but that's what I meant (that universities require sports to be excused but not professional school interviews).

Yeah, but it's not the universities that decide that. It's an NCAA rule. So just because a school excuses students for sports and not school interviews, it doesn't mean that they actually value sports more. 🙂

Ahh, well in that case I stand corrected. TIL.

GET THIS!!!

I asked the lab coordinator what she thought I should do since I need the course to graduate and I know I will have to miss at least one lab thanks to IU interviewing on Wednesdays..

she said I need to talk to each school and tell them I need to reschedule!!

I am so ****ty...I have to drop the course now and try to fit a different lab in. Not Happy.

Talk with the dean? That seems a little too strict on part of the lab coordinators.

Ya she just started at my school last semester. She is not happy with me currently. I hate going above someone's head to get something I want but I think this is necessary.

Weird, most classes I have taken usually allow for a few absences. Mainly to allow for sickness and other life events that come up.

A lot of professors say no to missing the class, using the excuse of "when you signed up for this class, you knew we had class/test on X days and you still chose to enroll"

My roommate used to just go to the doctor, fake being sick, and get a doctors note to give to the professor every time he missed classes because of interviews.

So I am dropping the class and picking up another one, which also caused me to have to switch out another course. On my primary app I put the classes that I was planning on taking this semester. My question is...do I have to now update all schools with my new schedule or do they not really care?

It's tentative. I don't think they'll care
