Classes That Helped you on the MCAT

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anatomy and Physiology definately. That's like 3/4 of the Bio section.

Human Biology. It refreshed all the main idea of biology applied to human like genetics, digestive system, sexual reproduction, dna, etc.

Biochem and physiology were my 2 saving graces...

Cell Biology
Genetics
Biochem (a little bit)

biochem, genetics, and ESPECIALLY physiology

I took a vertebrae physiology which was basically human physiology.........very helpful, I think more so than human anatomy!

disenchanted,

did u have pollock, zhang for vert phys?

man, vert phys and anatomy are gonna save u ur first year of med school.

peace

Omar

yea omar for first one I had pollak/zhang but I am actually talking about vert phys II with Dr. Silverthourn..........She was absolutely the BEST !!

BTW, i didn't know you were from UT.....you go to tech right?

yo

i took the mcat w/o physics, vert phys, and other higher level biology. I had to take those classes after the mcat and i still did pretty well. I attribute that to the princeton review books and taking a bunch of practice tests and practice problems under test taking conditions (timing w a timer)

I think I could have killed the MCAT if i didnt screw up my best section verbal; i took the mcat back when verbal was the first section w 9 passages instead of 8 (didnt they change it) drank too much coffee and had to pee, and they didnt let me use the bathroom so it killed my test. Man, if u take the mcat, make sure u wear a diaper so this doesnt happen to u

remember practice problems and understanding why u are missing the questions and the concepts behind it are key

peace

Omar

yeah i graduated from UT last year and matched at tech. I love austin, i go back all the time cuz i still got alot of friends at UT. Im gonna be at UT next week after my exams!

holler

Omar

urg.......bad memories !! Thank god I am finished with that crap!!

Actually omar, the passages for last year 2003 were also nine not eight. But I don't know about this year and thank god I don't need to know.

That is excellent that you did well without those courses. BTW, I have to disagree with you on princeton.......FOR ME THEY SUCKED :meanie: :meanie: I am about ready to choke my lame, unsympathetic, and eccentric teachers !!

Omar

hehe........i know :meanie:

BTW, I might know you omar..........you said you graduated last year right?

Its more likely I have seen you around.

what about quantitative chemical analysis?

Genetics is proving to be very useful as I study for the MCAT.

im gonna break the trend here...

any lit class. i had taken 3 by the time mcat rolled around, they were fun, we read the king arthur stories and other medieval/greek lit... but it really helped me on ALL sections. there's a hell of alot of reading on that test. and you have to learn how to read critically so you figure out what they are saying instead of just reading a sequence of words. it saves time b/c you learn to overlook the unnecessary crap and you just get the feel of the whole passage. for VR, alot of the questions are reasoning anyway, they arent going to ask you what the guy said in line 23. it obviously helps more on the VR, but you'd be surprised how much useless information they give you on the science sections.

if you dont take any lit classes, i would recommend reading a novel or 2 before you take the mcat. just spread it out over the semester so it doesnt take up all your time, read before bed or whatever. but it really really helps, trust me.

English. Helped on every single section. Most of the info is in the passages, anyway. Then physiology. Then journal clubs (okay, not a class, but you learn to think about scientific results critically, and often get a free lunch.)
