i have a question for those in pharmacy school right now.

do you guys take any courses with the dental/medical students.. if so, what were they? me and my friend got into a discussion about this and he told me that medical school is a lot harder because they have to learn what we learn (pharmacology) in fewer semesters..

i've always thought that the first year of pharmacology was taken with the medical and dental students?

Any insight will be helpful. THANKS!

So far the students from different programs do not mingle at our university, but our pharmacy professors do go and lecture at the medical school and vice versa: we get professors that teach at the medical school come to our pharmacy school to lecture....

med students learn a ton and do go through things more rapidly then us. They essentially finish classes in 2 years, rather then 3. However, I do not think that they learn what we learn. Their schooling focuses on diagnosing a problem and a little bit about treatment, but there is so much to cover and know that its hard to get into nitty gritty. We focus solely on treatment, they don't learn drugs to the degree and specificity that pharmacy students do. Case in point, i helped my girlfriend study drugs for her boards.... There were things that I pointed out as being important that ended up being actual questions (that she got right)

I believe some schools have combined A&P with med students.

But what we learn in pharmacology and what they learn in pharmacology are 2 different beasts.

We take pharmacology with the Ph.D. students. We do have an elective that is interdisciplinary, so you take it with med, nursing, and public health students.

Same here...in fact, our notes are the same. We get prerequisites like "MCAT level ochem" and see the word "physician" randomly sprinkled in our notes. Our professor apologizes, he's cool. haha

We had pharmacology with medical students (though we also had one extra hour a week during Fall, and two extra hours during Spring semester). Loved working with them on group quizzez... our knowledge just complemented one another's.

We also had anatomy with several of the allied health graduate programs, don't remember what they were, same for pathology. Physiology we had with PA and PT students, though PAs had an extra lab that us and PTs did not.

I think that's the extent of interdisciplinary classes at my school...

Medical school can be harder but not for the reasons your friend mention. Although the training of a physcian is more rigerous (in terms of quantity of information) and time of training, a pharmacist in the end will learn more about drugs than a physician.

With med school students: immunology, cell bio, biochem, genetics, organ phys, pharmacology, endocrinology/reproduction/metabolism, micro

With just med school faculty: histo, anatomy, neuro, lab medicine

We mingle our classes up until PY2 (fourth year) with Bachelors of Science students, and some others. We take first and second year of Med Chem/Pharmacology together, Pharmaceutics, and the pre-reqs.. It's great, we get to meet new classmates and friends. We learn the same material, if not more in detail for the other students. I think they get an extra edge when they apply for med school than other students with the extra knowledge.

We take biochem, physiology, neurology and infection/immunity with med students. Each class is 7 weeks long and VERY intense. These are not like the classes taken in undergrad. The undergrad pre-reqs for some of these (like biochem) didn't come close to preparing us for the pharmacy school version. The pharmacy students and medical students take the same test, but they are not ranked against each other. So, problems arise (i.e. med students complain) if the pharmacy class's passing level gets lowered but the medical class's doesn't. In some cases, like physio, the pharmacy students have 2 other classes plus weekly site visits while the med students have 1 other class AND physio was a pre-req for med students but not for pharmacy students. So basically, while we are taking a class physically together there can still be alot of separation and conflict.
Personally, I've learned a great deal of interesting stuff, but probably much more than I will ever use, even in a hospital practice.

We took pharmacology with the med students. We took immuno and micro with the PA students.
