Question for you ODs - (since I posted this on the ophthalmology forums and nobody cared to reply)

Do any of you ever recommend clear lens extraction for certain patients? My mom may be having this done (she has an appointment next week to discuss it with our OD) but I was curious to see if any of you have any experience with it. Does it seem to work pretty well? I guess anything is better than the vision she has now (high hyperope, lots of cyl, high add).

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it! 👍

In the hands of a good surgeon, I think it works very well.

btw: clear lens extraction.

What is the medical problem that she is trying to solve?

She just can't see very well. Her Rx has gotten worse over the past couple of years and she's to the point where she can't really see anything up close. She works at a doctor's office and she's about to start doing billing and insurance for them but it's very difficult for her to read all of the small print. She normally wears contact lenses for distance and readers over those, but even that isn't cutting it anymore. FWIW, her Rx is close to:

+7.00 -1.25 x?? / +3.00 add
+6.50 -3.25 x?? / +3.00 add

She's not looking for perfection, she's obviously never had it, she just wants to be more comfortable doing near work.

With a toric implant OU, she should be able to get pretty darn good distance vision. Depending on the cornea's K's (curvature) a multifocal implant might not be possible.
