Hi everyone,
I'm going to be applying to med school for fall 2006 and am currently in the process of deciding which schools to apply to. I heard that some schools have a "clean slate" policy, where if you get past the primary and secondary applications, then your acceptance/rejection is based primarily on your interview. Has anyone else heard of this and know which schools have this policy?

A lot of schools say this (i.e. that everyone is treated as equal once they make it to the interview). However I am skeptical. There are definitely people whose applications are so amazing that they would need to be a total psycho at the interview to not get admitted, and there are people who really need to "wow" the admissions people to overcome a borderline application. I think a better statement would simply be that everyone who gets to the interview level has a chance of being admitted.

I've heard that yale does this. but tha'ts hte only school i've heard of. others seem to use the interview to differentiate you from people with similar stats/extracirrics.

UVM said on their interview day that if you have gotten that far, then you've already passed the academic and score hurdle. So they seem to emphasize getting to know your personality.

Yet, if it is an open file interview, I have a hard time believing that someone with outstanding grades and MCAT scores will be judged purely on personality.

Yale does this? Damn, their average stats are pretty friggin' high still.

Yeah, they should publish the averages for those interviewed and those accepted, and then we'll see how much of a "clean slate" it is. That is, of course, assuming that all the kids with 3.9s and 39s aren't coincidentally those with the best personalities as well....

lots of schools will at least have "closed" interviews where teh interviewer will have all of your application materials except your grades and mcat. in theory, your academic record won't persuade the interviewer one way or the other.

however, once your app goes to the selections committee they see your entire profile.
