Clearinghouse and Billing Software

Any feedback on it? I will be using it for Inpatient billing. Hospital has paper charts. I heard about Medisoft but people say their clearinghouse is not good.

Can anyone explain how using clearinghouse for billing insurance works? I have read that Optum EDI is the most commonly used.

Is it always necessary to use this type of program to submit bills to insurance ? Or does it just make the process a lot more hassle free?
