Hello,
I was just wondering how CLEP exams are viewed by medical school?
I wasn't thinking about taking any of the pre-med courses as a CLEP exam, just other courses.
Is it advisable? Has anyone else done this?
Also, how does a CLEP exam look on a transcript? Does it just show that I received credit for the class, but no grade?
How does it count in the GPA?

As I've heard it, generally to be avoided, but isn't going to be a major deal as long as it's not one of the pre-reqs (to include the year of English and the occasional Pre-Calc or Calculus that many schools require). If you want more details I would recommend posting over on the pre-med allopathic board for more general questions like this. A lot more traffic there and you're more likely to encounter more people who have direct knowledge, often down to the specific school level. Over here we tend to focus more on the "OMG I've been out of school for 15 years, WTF do I do now?" side of things 😉

I had one test that counted for 6.5 hours of English and it was just averaged in with no problem. I would not do a clep for any science pre- req though as you need the associated labs that go with these classes. Depending on the undergrad school, there are reluctant to grant full credit for a science clep as there courses are usually bundled lec/ lab as a series and they are going to want you to take them to advance to the next level.

Hmmm...yes, that other board is quite mean. I think it just shows how young they are. I blame it on immaturity. *shrugs*

How was it averaged in? Did you get graded just like you would in a class and then calculate it into the total GPA the same way or was it strictly pass/fail and you get full credit for the class if you pass?

I just wanted to get the other credits out of the way. I'm definitely going to be in-class for the pre-reqs.
Thanks, all!

It was just a pass/fail for credit. The undergrad accepted it as a English lit with comp as that was what the transcript showed. Amcas and aacomas accepted it for prereq in English but no grade was averaged in for the gpa.

I've done quite a bit of research on it, as my BS degree has 60 CLEP/DSST credits. I'm going back to school for the premed, as I haven't done the majority of the sciences yet.
The deal with CLEP, as I understand it, is that you won't want them to appear as part of your prereqs. You need labs for them anyway, which as you know CLEP doesn't offer.
