Clergy LOR

just wanted to know if anyone has gotten one and actually gotten into programs i was thinking about using this along LOR's from therapists, one from my professor, and another one from a clergy person...just to show i have sense of ethics and values personal to myself

For schools in PTCAS, allowed LOR are included in the Program Information. Clergy is an option, but I know my Univ does not accept them. I am chair of the Admissions Committee, and if an applicant has one, we just ignore it. We only read LOR from our approved recommenders. I know I have to check who we will allow LOR from when we set up and then review our PTCAS info, so I imagine an applicant will see that.

well all my schools allow for it...im asking if they are looked at on the same level as a LOR from a physical therapist or professor

(As a clergy) i would doubt a clergy letter would be viewed as highly, we kind of have to say nice things about you if you go to the church. We can't lie, but we can't really be as coldly objective

i actually know the clergyman, personally so it would be more than just your generalized LOR

I wouldn't use it for the sol reason that you want diversity in your LoR. Use it if it help you. If you known that clergy for x amounts of years and that person can write it personalized, use it. I would rather have a clergy write me a great LoR rather than a PT writing me an average LoR. That my opinion.

If you don't have anyone better and your school accepts the LoR, why not... Although, like the information you've been given, another PT or professor may be more objective. If your clergyman can rate your critical thinking (with 'primary' life examples) abilities and academic ability to succeed (as per some of the rating criteria in the LoR) in rigorous graduate studies (not just "this kid is a really nice guy/gal"), then they should be fine.

If you're asking if the clergy LoR would give you a bump amongst other qualified candidates, maybe, but chances are small. The school you apply to must have a religious affiliation and must recommend or require it. But if it requires one, then there goes your advantage. Other than that, the simple answer is no.

My reasoning: (not worth much!)

2 letters from Physical Therapist- Talks about our specific strengths related to our field (most important)

1 letter from Professor- reenforces our academic capability, especially if GPA is low

1 letter from Boss/supervisor- speaks about our professionalism in the work place and interactions with others.

I agree with AlexFLA. My LORs came from two PTs, one professor, and one boss. It's a good combination.

PTtoB: I understand your reasoning for wanting to use a clergy member for a LOR. That being said, very few schools require a LOR from clergy; however, most schools will accept one. If your clergy member happens to work part time at a church and then full time as a PT or an OT, that would be a golden option. Best of luck! Peace and God bless
