hi guys

i've noticed that a lot of people have ranked the top ten surgical residencies at all the typical places (mgh, hopkins, duke, etc)

but i was wondering why the cleveland clinic, which is always ranked in the us news top hospitals, doesn't seem to be coming up as a good place to do a surgical residency?

cheers

I'm not by any means an expert on this--but one possible reason is the Clinic is not a level one trauma center, so you will not get the trauma experience you need unless you do "rotations" elswhere in the city.

CC is brillilant in many of the surgical subs, but is driven by the subspecialties somewhat to the exclusion of g.surg. Not a brilliant program for g.surg but it might be solid, not too sure. I do know that I never ran into any g.surg advisers who would recommend it up with major academic centers. (Vs say Urology at CC which I've heard is #1)

but i mean...MGH isn't a level 1 trauma center either?

The Cleveland Clinic is the #1 hospital for heart/cardiac surgery, according to US News annual rankings

Pure speculation on my part, but maybe it has something to do with resident autonomy. Isn't the CCF a private enterprise? If so the majority of patients are probably heading to the Clinic to be treated by well-known attendings, thus limiting resident involvement.

cleveland clinic, much like the mayo clinic, is a attending/fellow directed environment, which can lead to overshadowing the general surgery residency education. you can still receive amazing training at either, but the cleveland clinic is not really a research based/teaching hospital, rather it is a clinical factory and thus an amazing environment for a fellow.
