ill chime in. I've been in practice for about 10 years now and applied to several places over these years. I, however, have only worked at 2 places. I look regularly to see how the compensation ($$$/hr) compares to my current practice. Fair to say general surgery pay has been woeful for a long time. Many of us just take it knowing well enough we deserve more but don't want to be inconvenienced to ask for more/find something better or have lack of time/energy because we are too busy working for peanuts.
You have to look at pp vs hosp employed. You will get more going straight into hosp employed starting off. pp on a partnership track will def start lower but can ramp up higher depending how much you hustle. Now you have to also factor in call and hours. gsurg offers vary wildly imo - you have rural vs urban, academic vs not. I think lots has to deal with call coverage and how that contributes to your compensation.
From my experience gsurg hourly rate should be around $200 -> 400k per 40hr work week. Call coverage (acs and not trauma) exclusive of your daily 8hr work rate should be 1k/day weekdays and 1.5K -2K/day for weekends. This should be an additional ~75k by years end if taking 1 day of week call. this is for hosp employed in a vhcol area. I would expect more if somewhere in a less desirable area. I am usually shocked (in a bad way) hearing what my gsrug/colo buddies are making in midwest states. Personally, working in the midwest you need to be getting north of 600k. That's me tho. As reference I make 530k gross with malpractice+health/dental+401k matching(can contribute to max irs employee and employer of ~74k) benefits working 48hrs per week average across the year taking about 1:9 acs calls in a desirable part of southern cali.
be prepared to take something much less going into to PP. consider the low upfront pay as your buy-in for how many years before you partner. Usually this is a fraction of partner pay or a set amount for 2/3 years. if taking this route please, please, please take a look at the books. Pay close attention to PPO insurance vs HMO vs free for service medi-cal. Make sure they have assets and not just a rented office space with insurance contracts. Some places will hire you, abuse you and not partner you. Expect to make about the same or slightly more dollar wise compared to hosp employed, but your yearly take home will be more given tax writeoffs.
