Mayo has always been at the top of my list. I am a junior so the time to apply is approaching. Is Mayo big on research experience? I kinda got that impression when I was reading about students whom they accepted and waitlisted. I just want to improve my chances. 🙂 Thanks!

To the question regarding international students you may want to call Jane and ask...Also if you go to http://www.mayo.edu/mms/ and look in the bottom of the page there is a video clip called "A day in the life of..." gives you an insight into what it is like at Mayo med school.

What do they look for in applicants? (Besides good grades and scores, that is.) I just figure that with such a small entering class, getting in has got to be a crapshoot (once you've made the numbers cut).

Mayo, Baylor, UCSF, UCLA, UCSD, UTSW, UW, UAB

I hail from a state school and so do many of my classmates. I think that one of the things (but this is just my personal opinion) that Mayo looks for is a long term commitment to serving your community. I personally believe that Mayo for sure looks beyond "numbers" and seek those students that not only can excel in the classroom but that are going to be giving much back to the community be it in the way of research, volunteering, or mentoring.

Ok, so I understand what looking "beyond the numbers" means, but I'm curious to know just HOW FAR beyond the numbers they look considering their avg GPA is 3.8 and MCAT 32.6. Would I be wasting my time with a 3.6 28R? I have really good EC's and experiences in healthcare and serving the underserved communities. Great LOR's also. Dunno, need some very honest advice here cuz I've already paid a lot thus far applying to 24 schools!

I'd say it's just the opposite. The majority of our incoming first year class this year is from state and smaller private schools I believe. There are only 2 or 3 ivy leaguers if I remember correctly. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good schools represented by our class, but you don't have to go to a top ten (or ever top 100 for that matter) undergrad to get in.

I know someone with a 29 who got into Mayo last year and ended up turning it down for somewhere else. Definitely apply. PM if you have any questions.

A school like Mayo doesnt have to look beyond the numbers. They get more then enough applicants with top scores (GPA > 3.7, MCAT > 30) that also have outstanding extracurriculars and ec's; they don't need to take students with lower numbers in order to find people with diverse experiences. IMO.
As for travelDoc, your numbers are below average, but remember that about half of the matriculants are below average based on the numbers. If you have set yourself apart from the above-average pre-med with your experiences, I think you should apply. Note that I said to compare yourself to above-average applicants - you're not competing against average applicants.

Thanks for the honest replies everyone! I think I'm gonna do some more research on the school before i apply (but I'm definitely interested). A big factor for me is that it's not that big of a city so who knows what the attitude towards the GLBT community is like, or if there even is one! But would love to go cuz it's an awesome school that looks like it has a lot of opportunities available.
