Wasting another holiday away from family and friends in the call room, I thought of the adam Sandler movie click. Essentially he gets a remote control that lets him fast forward parts of life. If you had such a remote, would you just fast forward your call shifts and move life along?
Not at this point in my life. Let it ride and enjoy the scenery.

Not for this one. But on the hook for another holiday. We can always pay someone to get rid of it, I hope you have that option as well. Price of doing business. Also, YOU can be a little louder when the fcuking crnas are yipping all the “physician anesthesiologists” don’t do any work and don’t have the heart of a nurse…..

Happy Thanksgiving! I appreciate your hard work! Your patients appreciate it too!

I definitely feel for you. Best way to manage in my mind: Find a good book or movie and cherish the chance to be alone then celebrate on a different day with family. Exact holiday dates are all an artificial construct anyway.

Also specifically for this holiday, focus on being thankful for a well paid job in a safe warm secure environment. Overall we have it pretty good. Thanks for taking one for the team, I'm sure your partners are thankful you are working!

When I am working a night or holiday or whatever, I sort of picture the movie a Few Good Men and I'm the soldier standing watch on the wall so everybody else can rest easy.

In recent years it feels like there are more things trying to breech the wall and there are less resources to defend the wall.

I sort of agree, but personally I can't rationally determine whether my emotional feeling is because that is actually true or if it is just my mind's response to the continual frustrations over the years with all the little BS we deal with on a daily basis (JCAHO, whiny surgeon, administrators making ever dumber rules, etc.).

I like working on a holiday because usually the surgeons don't want to come in. Also, I'd rather have days off when everyone else is working so things aren't crowded.

I love taking holiday call as a locums ... at least, at non-academic hospitals. Any case that can possibly get put off, gets postponed by the surgeons.

I'm covering CT call right now 🙂 sitting on my sofa, arguing about guns in an SDN thread. Spent the morning doing yard work with the dogs, though they weren't much help. Just got in the way and talked smack to the neighbor's dog through the fence. Odds are in my favor that I won't see the inside of the hospital until Monday morning.
