Hi,
I was hoping to get an answer from some pharm experts. I had a friend ask me about clinda. Okay so bascially at 300mg it is bacterstatic and at 600mg, it is -cidal. Why? She says it is not just a matter of dosing (i.e. giving more making it cidal). She says that her professor wants to know more specfically why? Thanks

What else could he be looking for? With all Beta Lactam drugs, they are bateriostatic at low concentrations and cidal at higher concentrations. I guess it would just be a function of how much inhibition of cell wall synthesis and crosslinking the bacteria can withstand before undergoing lysis.

If by clinda you mean clindamycin (I'm not up with the lingo) it is not a beta lactam, rather it binds to the 50s ribosomal subunit inhibiting protein synthesis.

However, I don't know the answer to the original question.

I totally forgot that it was a protein synthesis inhibitor and just started typing without thinking. Sorry! An interesting thing though, I was online on my laptop and in the room was a family doctor, an oncologist, and a psychiatrist and I asked them this question and told them what I was typing and in retrospect I realize that not a single one of them had any idea what the answer was, nor did they realize that I had made a mistake in calling clinda a beta lactam. sheesh.

Ha ha. First rule of clinical rotations. If you know nothing start abbreviating everything. The hope is that people won't notice how ignorant you are. 😉
