Clinical based schools with high out of state acceptances

I'm looking for a few extra schools to apply to that are clinically oriented and have high out of state acceptance rates. I'm from GA, and will most likely to go GA since it's the most affordable (<$60,000 total all four years!), but obviously it's not safe to apply to just one school. Any suggestions? I want a clinically based curriculum because research bores me. I also don't have any regional biases.

Case and Tufts are very good clinically. They are private, so their acceptance is not based on residency. According to the ADEA guide, Case accepted 62 out of staters and 13 in state applicants, and Tufts accepted 131 out of staters and 27 in-state applicants.

You should check out predents.com or the ADEA guide to dental schools for more info on schools that accept a high number of out of staters.

Temple is also one of the really good clinically oriented dental schools. It has 144,000 patients a year according to the admissions office.

You can become a NY resident after your first year (and save 60K for the last three years), and get your own chair/operatory space for your whole clinic time. Talk about great clinical preparation! Super great school in every way.

The only part of upstate NY I've seen is Fredonia, so if Buffalo is anything like that, I'd run in the other direction. I like cold weather only when it's got a good city to compensate, like Boston. How's Buffalo in terms of actually living?

Well, I don't live there quite yet! But honestly, the city had a lot to do with my choosing it. I know quite a few people there and have visited it many times....I also know Boston and New York City to be able to compare it. For me, it's perfect because I grew up in the country (the Berkshires of Massachusetts) and so I wanted a somewhat small, undiscovered city. Buffalo has lots of culture and fun things to do (zoo, aquarium, science museum, art museum, symphony, tons of coffee shops, niagara falls) while still being reasonably sized and SUPER SUPER cheap ($250/mo apartments!). Also, I really liked the aesthetics of the campus...all the grad programs, science and humanities and whatnot, are all on a seperate campus from the undergrad, so it looked like a great community. Sure, there aren't fancy tall buildings, but it seems like space isn't an issue so that people just build out instead of up. Also, you're in the building for most of your days anyway, so as long as you can enjoy your town somewhat, you're golden! and you don't want TOO much to do.....*runs after bright shiny things*



And snow/cold won't bother me since I grew up in the mountains. Besides, it's just white stuff! Keep you awake as you trudge through it to preclin 😉

Yeah, definitely apply to other schools. Competition at MCG has become really tight and they really look closely at where you live within the state, i.e., they want super candidates from underserved areas. This year will be my second time applying there and I am adding several other schools this year.

I know they emphasize clinical dentistry but I am sure others on the board can list several others that do as well.

I work with someone who graduated from Buffalo and she always talks very fondly of it, so that will be added to my list this year.
