Hi!
If anyone is familiar with the Clinical Care Extender Internship I would appreciate your input.

I have an interview with them for a internship position in St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, California.
Is there a fee for this internship? (besides the $10 application fee)? I saw a link on google for an "internship fee" for this program that was $100..did you have to pay this?

Also, any tips for interviewing? I don't really know what to expect..so any info is appreciated! Thanks!

I had a group interview. We were asked the type of questions where the interviewer would describe a scenario and then he would pick one of the interviewees to explain how he/she would react in the given scenario. I was asked things like "a patient you are feeding lunch to decides to yell out obscenities. How do you react?" All the scenarios described just required bit of common sense to come up with the right answer. Just remember that the patient always comes first when you are responding to the scenario questions. At the end of the interview, the interviewees had to write a timed essay. The essay prompt was something like describe the state of health care in America.
Yes, there is a $100 fee that you pay after you pass the interview stage.

I also did this internship at Hoag in Newport Beach, CA. I did it about 5 years ago now, so I don't know what kind of changes have taken place since then. I don't remember a fee, but like I said.. it was a while ago.

As the above poster said, there was a group interview, which wasn't intimidating, but was professional. I believe it had a rolling admissions type of process too, so its better to interview earlier in the process. I didn't get in the first time, but applied again earlier in the cycle and was accepted. As with any group interview, I think it's important to find that balance where you can get your answers in, but without being rude and overbearing. I think it's also helpful to make it clear that you're listening to your fellow interviewees, by saying you agree or disagree with him or her (addressed by name) and then add more of your own input. Once you're in, there were a few days of training and little test things that are no brainers if you pay attention.

The program itself is a great introduction to clinical care. They said over and over that you get out of it what you put into it. So there's a lot of flexibility in your role and you control that to a large extent. At least with me, we didn't spend a lot of time with doctors, more with nurses, patient care assistants/techs, and most importantly, patients. I think that's an important and humbling experience for people who are focused on becoming doctors 🙂

Good luck!

I did this program 6 years ago. It is definitely a good program for premed to garner clinical experience, my OR and ER rotations were great. Take advantage of the leadership opportunities otherwise your LOR will be super duper generic.

For the interview, I wasnt' able to make it to any of the group interviews so I just emailed the program manager to schedule an 1 on 1 interview. IMO, you have a better chance of getting in with 1 on 1 interview over group interview ( you get to answer all the questions, they get to know you better etc.) I interviewed late and still got in.

My essay question was an ethical dilemma where I have to take a side between patients and hospital and elaborate the reasoning for my stance. I took the patient side, compassionate, patient advocate, free will blah blah blah.

The fee is for your 2-day training (8 hour one day and 4 hours the second day- breakfast and lunch are provided) and the fugly uniform polo.

And volunteers are not allowed to handle blood bags, just a headsup. Good luck!
