Does shadowing count as clinical experience?
Does hospital volunteering count as clinical experience? (in somewhat close contact with inpatients; giving them food/water and dropping in to say hi)

I've heard two conflicting guidelines: that shadowing and volunteering do not count as clinical experience (must be EMT, scribing, etc), and also that being close enough to smell the patient counts as clinical experience. So which one is it?

If they do count as clinical experience, could I double dip the hours; listing them as volunteering and clinical experience - or in the case of shadowing, shadowing and clinical experience?

This is what it's all about.

Shadowing is NOT volunteering. Volunteering is your giving to others. Service and all that.

Patient contact experience is for showing AdComs that you know what you're getting into, and show off your altruistic, humanism side. We need to know that you're going to like being around sick or injured people for the next 40 years.

Shadowing is for showing us that you understand what a doctor's day is like, and how different types of doctors go about the practice of Medicine.

Do NOT approach this with a check-the-box mindset.

Most EMTs are glorified taxi drivers anyway.

You can't list the same experience down twice such that you have twice the hours listed that you actually have, if that's what you're asking

Thanks Goro, one more question; i believe you read this part regarding double dipping incorrectly

Yes.

Can I list my clinical volunteering as both clinical experience and volunteering?
Can I list shadowing as both clinical experience and shadowing?

If you interact with patients in any capacity it's clinical as far as I can tell. I had a job working as an RA on a cohort study visiting patients in clinic for enrollment etc., I characterized it as clinical.

When you classify things in AMCAS, it already has the combinations for you. For volunteering, there is one category that is called medical/clinical volunteering and one category that is called non-medical/non-clinical volunteering. Physician shadowing doesn't give you the option to specify clinical or non-clinical because physician shadowing is, by definition, clinical. So basically, you don't have to worry about classifying your experiences as both clinical and volunteering or both clinical and shadowing because they've already done it for you.

I see, thanks; is there a section titled only "clinical experience"
