i kno this may seem like a stupid question....but when a school is more clinical or more research, wat exactly does that mean? I mean if a school is more research based, does that mean that u spend less time in the clinic and if that is the case, wouldnt that mean that u spend less time with patients....can someone plz explain this to me

Some schools are strong in both areas. Being "more research" generally means they have more opportunities to do research while in dental school. There may be more funded labs and more conducive to students doing research. Except for a few special programs, I think most research done during dental school is still extracurricular... but some schools don't have very much research at all and I personally think that that is a detriment to a well rounded education...but that is just my opinion so what's that mean?

so both schools will have their students spend the same amount of time in clinics but the "more" researched based school will offer its students research oppurtunities if they wished...correct? then if this is the case, then the schools lacking research suck unless u r no interested in research watsoever

also, if research is to be extracurricular then im guessin only a few students will actually be part of it because of the already heavy load that they will be getting in dental schools....if this is the case, then its not that advantagous to attend a big time research school because u r not really goin to have that much time to do research in the first place?

i think it has to do with the focus of the school. Most dental schools have both clinics and research labs but some focus more on one than the other. Ohio state is huge with research and so is NYU. and i think that reseach is something offered but not required- so people can stand out and pursue specialties (i could be wrong).

All dental schools have clinics- otherwise how would you perform on patient? Im assuming you are asking about community work in the clinics? schools like Asdoh have a huge emphasis on community clinical work. they pride themselves for preparing their students for working in clinics, especially in underserved areas. I know that case starts in the clinics really early too

Different schools require a different amount of clinical experience to graduate. FYI I am totally making up these numbers but they are valid examples, but say School A requires only 5 root canal therapies to graduate, whereas School B requires 15 ... and similar numbers of other procedures ... School B would be more clinical. The dentists I work with told me it's in my best interest as a future professional to choose a school which requires more clinical work unless I'm planning to go into research (i.e. not practice as a dentist, rather work for Colgate R&D or something like that. I'm planning to practice as a dentist, therefore I want as much clinical experience as possible.)

... now present d-school students may correct me if I'm wrong on this, I'm going off information given to me by dentists who have all been practicing for at least 5 years so some info they give me may be outdated 🙂

Schools could also have different clinical experiences than other schools, based on locations, and the schools missions. Research opportunities, as well as special graduate residency programs, are also plusses.👍 I guess the best decisions is to choose the schools that you would fit well in.
