Yes... having two jobs as a pharmacist can get you money, money, money. I know a pharmacist who has a salary coming from a hospital and also works part time at Walgreens to make some extra cash... she's LOADED. She sacrifices free time, but she's new to the area and isn't married so it doesn't bother her at all.

Ditto - I've worked with a pharmacist whose full time job is consulting pharmacist with nursing homes. Her full-time job is somewhat flexible in terms of when she works. Some of her stuff for that job can be done on laptop at home, and (maybe more importantly is much less stressful than retail - more of a desk job) so she can then also float and get retail hours a couple of nights a week.i.<3.pharmacy said:

Now that I think about it, if anything, hospital pharmacists should have more opportunities at overtime. In retail you only get overtime if someone calls out/gives up a shift, or if it's a holiday...but that's only working 8-12 hours a day, unless you work at a 24 hr pharmacy. Hospitals generally don't close, so as a result, you have day/evening/night/swing shifts to pick up.
Oh yeah, and I'm sure who you work for is a big factor. Since I'm sure my hospital makes too much money, and it's a nonprofit, not to mention understaffed, they tend to not be pennypinchers regarding overtime. But if you work for say, a for-profit, I'm sure they wouldnt be too keen on time and a half.
In CA, pharmacists are usually hourly except for management. Clinical pharmacists fall under the hourly rate as well since most clinical services are provided 7 days a week & requires more than 1 individual. So...in CA, pharmacists fall under the labor laws which govern all hourly individuals - anything over 8hrs/day and 40hrs/week is overtime - no exceptions...unless (there is always an unless!).....there is a previous agreement which allows more than 8 hours without overtime. There is usually not much overtime because people don't want to work overtime unless they absolutely have to. But...if there is, the DOP doesn't mention it unless it becomes routine (I've only known one individual who abused it).
The exception (a previous longer than 8hr agreement) situation covers OR pharmacy which is usually a 4 day, 10 hour a week job. In this case, there is no overtime since it is an agreed upon arrangement. When cases go beyond the time the pharmacist is there, or OR needs something off hours, the inpatient pharmacy picks up the work.
Now...S.CA - retail pharmacists are covered by a union agreement, so the union's overtime rules apply. I don't believe hospital pharmacists are unionized - perhaps TrojanAnteater (is that his name???) would know....
Yes....in CA all pharmacists work weekends & holidays - even clinical. As the previous poster indicated....it is distributed, but usually on a seniority basis.
