What does a clinical pharmacist actually do in the hospital setting? Do they participate in rounds? Do they mentor pharmacy students? Do they have patients in which they monitor drug intake/reactions? Do they present data/studies as a form of instruction to other personnel in the hospital?

A clinical pharmacist monitors the drugs of the patient. They do participate in rounds with the doctors. In my area, there is a mentoring program with clinical pharmacists, and there is an elective called resident shadowing. Some pharmacists do present information to other health care personnel in the hospital.

Yes, I do all of the above, plus I order all inpatient medications, write chemos & TPN's, precept students and residents, review protocols, etc etc etc.

I've done (still do...) both. I've never done industry. But....they are equally comphrehensive & well rounded - just different. You need a different skill set. Not everyone is cut out for one or the other & certainly personal preference comes into play.

One practice setting is no better nor worse than another - just fits an individual's personality or strengths/weakness better. They both serve a vital function within the field - so neither should be diminished by comparison to the other.

And yes...this topic has been discussed in detail in earlier threads.....
