Hi all. I have a clinical research coordinator job that I've been doing alongside school for the past couple of years. I do the standard things a CRC would do, basically exclusively for industry-sponsored trials. Just to confirm, this would be a better fit under the Clinical Employment section instead of the research tab, correct? I work extensively with patients doing follow-up visits, and some of the currently active studies' drugs have gone on to show efficacy in the target population in interim analyses and/or final analyses, but none of these have been FDA-approved yet (save for the drug of a Phase IV study).

Do you have something else to list under the Research tab? Are you planning to target highly-selective, research-oriented med schools (aka, top twenties)? What other clinical experience and shadowing are you planning to list?

I plan to apply to T20 schools, pending my MCAT in March (3.97 GPA). Hours are given based on what they will be when I apply. I've included my CRC position hours/description below for reference. I am a traditional applicant (currently in my junior year), and my school is not high-tier. ORM. CA resident.

Clinical Research Coordinator (2100 hrs over a little under 2 years): Recently named lead coordinator on 20+ trials, mostly industry-sponsored, for a specific disease. I do IRB work (modifications, initial submissions, etc.), negotiate budgets and contracts, screen patients for eligibility, attend Investigator Meetings on behalf of our hospital, and perform patient follow-up visits (mostly in-person with the occasional weekly check-in phone call) for about 30-40 enrolled patients. Also have to manage patient medications and changes to patient health, through phone calls and in-person visits, with guidance from our PI as needed.

Research
Human subjects lab (600-700 hrs over 2.5 years): Previously helped with data collection and very minor data analysis. Currently working on my own project with guidance from postdoc/PI. 2 poster presentations within my school, no publications.

Clinical Experience
Clinic (250-300 hrs over 2 years): Volunteer for an entirely undergraduate-run clinic to provide free healthcare to the underserved population in the area. Have a leadership role helping run a specific subpart of the clinic, which focuses on providing ophthalmic/vision services to the underserved.

Hospital Volunteering (125 hrs): Volunteered in a few departments in a hospital in high school and continued for the first year of college when I was back for vacations. I plan to talk about my experience doing this in my PS since it was important early in my path towards medicine.

Clinical Research Intern (150 hrs over 1 year): Spent a year screening ED patients for studies and assisting in the consent process for those who qualified. It was a lot less involved than my CRC position (solely screened and consented, did not do follow-up visits or any IRB work/contracts/budgets) - is this the correct section to place this under?

Shadowing (30 hrs): Shadowed a couple EM physicians for a few of their shifts and shadowed a psychiatrist in my clinic for a few hours. I plan to get ~25 hours in primary care by the time I apply.

Considering your goals, you have a decent amount of research already without labeling your current CRC gig as Research. Your clinical experience through the free clinic +hospital volunteering is also above the usual average. So I agree with @Wahkoon that you can reasonably tag the CRC position as Employment-Medical/Clinical.

I'm glad you already have plans to augment your current shadowing activities.

Thanks! Do you have any recommendations for how I classify the clinical research intern position above? The more I think about it, clinical experience isn't appropriate since I'm hesitant to consider it equal to more traditional hospital volunteering. Could I call it Research, or is Extracurricular Activities more appropriate?

Are you referring to the Clinical Research Intern (150 hrs over 1 year) position? I agree it shouldn't be called clinical volunteering. I suggest you call it Research or Other, but I lean toward the former, especially if it preceded Human subjects lab.
