For those of you who are thinking of becoming clinical specialists or know something about it.. which specialty (if any) do you think would offer the pharmacist the ability to interact with the patient(example: primary/ambulatory care) while at the same time offering the stimulation and challenge of dealing with many medications (example: critical care).
Also...which sort of specialization do you think has (or will have) the most available opportunities. (I know the specialist positions are few and far between to begin with.)

I would choose Oncology, Cardiology, or Pediatric Clinical Pharmacist. Because these are the busiest hospital units, so there should be more job oppurtunity for Clinical Pharmacist specializing in one of these areas.

This is just my opinion.

Ambulatory care gives you a lot of interaction with patients. My internship was at a patient care pharmacy. Patients made appointments with the pharmacist and she helped them with things like diabetes management. I shadowed an internal medicine pharmacist and they never interacted with patients, only with their charts. I'm not sure there is a happy medium between the two.

Once you start your rotations, you'll get a better feel for which area is the right one for you.

Hey Dana did you you know about how much ambulatory care specialists make? Thanks 🙂
