Heya. With time, if MD/DO is your goal, you can get there. I’ll simply detail what I did (just finished M1 year) in the hopes that there’s something in there that might help guide you. Based on your post, we do share a few similarities.
I finished undergrad in 2012 and fortunately started medical school last fall 2018. Undergrad cGPA was about 2.9, with sGPA just over 3.0. The summer right after graduation I hopped into the DIY post-bac grind retaking a few science courses I got D’s in, like ORGO1 & ORGO2. The aim, like I’d say should be the case for you, was to get no lower than a B+ in any course taken then-on. Other courses I took included those of the “higher-level” science variety, that I hadn’t taken yet, ex. biochemistry, immunology, etc. Luckily, this was all at my same undergrad institution. If you can afford to, I’d also recommend easing into it building from 1-2 courses per semester to 3. Your Masters of Nursing might make that a less important consideration for you.
Then after a few years of that, slowly, I was in the position to pursue a coursework Masters, being able to count a few of those same post-bac course credits I’d already taken (and done well in) towards that degree, while being able to take more higher-level science courses, ex. Central Nervous System, Developmental Biology, etc. So I earned that degree in a year in 2016, with a gradGPA around 3.8ish. I’m not sure of the course content and load of your nursing program, but it very well could serve the same role for you, if you are succeeding at it. Don’t discount its potential contribution to your app.
That same summer 2016 I took the new MCAT, at the time, applied for med school and fortunately bagged an MD acceptance for 2017 entry. For certain reasons, I had to defer my entry one extra year to 2018, but that part of my story probably isn’t relevant here, so I won’t belabor it. EC-wise, throughout those “gap years” I was volunteering in many roles at a local hospital, got a research position for a while and shadowed some physicians (DO included, which allows you to also more freely apply to DO schools, like I also did).
Well, that’s that. Again, with planning, patience, resilience and some Luck, which you seem to have, you can do it! Don’t let the naysayers keep you from trying. Remember it’s your life and future, not theirs. Best of luck and let me know if I can help with anything else!
P.S. Based on my M1 year, here are a few of the post-bac/grad courses I’m glad I took before med school and recommend, in order of usefulness IMO: Immunology (<- PLEASE take this if you can & haven’t yet), Neuroanatomy, General Physiology/Anatomy, and/or Developmental Biology.
Boy I wrote a lot this time...😊
