"Closer" ADCOMs?

Do you think ADCOMs assign their top applicants to specific interviewers in order to attempt to "close" those applicants? Perhaps I'm just trying to feel good about myself, but I'm under the impression that everyone who gets an interview is "wanted" by the school. But those top stats/ECs applicants are probably wanted even more than everyone else.

This isn't supposed to be a super serious thread, but I am truthfully curious.

Nope, you're just trying to feel good about yourself.

Admissions just assigns interviewees to whomever happens to be free to interview for that day. They don't have any time to match you to a specific interviewer, given the turnover, schedule changes, and cancellations that occur with interviewees.

Just because you have an interview does't mean they really want you to come. People have still been rejected outright after interview - it's the last piece in your whole application.

+1 . Its really whoever is available, and they will most likely switch around interviewers for people during the day. Unfortunately, you can't think that a school wants you just because they send you an interview invite... They could be trying to make sure that the person behind the good numbers truly wouldn't be a good fit due to his/her app.

But not a bad thing to keep up the positive thinking, right?!!

I guess I hadn't thought about that. I was under the impression that they wouldn't waste their time interviewing people who they weren't interested in. I'm not saying that can't change during/after the interview, but I figured anyone getting interviewed is there for a reason.

It's really funny how different perception and viewpoints can be. It seems like your thought process and mindset going into an interview is that they're trying to close you. On the other hand, I'm going into any possible interview hoping I can close THEM. lol... To be honest I wish I could adopt your philosophy and confidence. Good luck!

I never said that they were trying to close me. Nowhere was that indicated or even implied. I was talking about closing "top applicants". For example, someone like NickNaylor.

I feel the same way as you. I'm going in trying to sell myself and make them want me at their school. If I was a better applicant I would probably have more confidence. I'm certainly going in with the mindset of "Interview well and you'll get in" though. Not because I'm arrogant, but because I believe it to be true for everyone who gets interviewed.

I feel the same way as you. I'm going in trying to sell myself and make them want me at their school. If I was a better applicant I would probably have more confidence. Maybe I'm just ignorant, but what context of the word "closer" are you using? Are you trying to say that they select interviewers based on your application so that they get someone who's familiar with your background to interview you?

I think that's probably true for some of the schools. I had a friend who interviewed at a couple of places and they matched her to someone who did research that was pretty similar to the research job she had.

In the OP I was using "closer" in reference to someone most qualified/best able to convince top applicants (e.g 4.0/40) that this school was the one they needed to pick.

No. Everyone interviewed is also going to be "recruited." The screeners are just trying to get the best candidates for their school. No one has the excess funds to waste time interviewing people only to turn them off in the process.

This was my original assessment of the interview process. I was just asking if there were special circumstances for those highly desirable students.
