Hey Guys,

So I'm really into lab animal medicine and Purdue doesn't have a lab animal club. I have emailed a student who is trying to start one and I've emailed another student seeing if I can create a lab animal arm of the exotics club. I have some ideas in mind as far as speakers and talking to someone about wet labs. What are some other things that lab animal clubs do at other schools? Or clubs in general at vet school? Thanks!

I know that @kcoughli is a lab animal person and is starting a residency soon, but I don't know if she had a lab animal club at UMN, but maybe she'd be able to give you some ideas?

One thing I would look into if you start a lab animal club is to be affiliated with ASLAP, the national organization. Or at least pay dues to them, which are $22.50/year as a vet student. There are a lot of benefits to being a member of the national organization too.

Thanks! Will definitely look into this. I'm hoping we can go to an ASLAP conference. I'm about to turn in an individual application for membership for myself!

So UMN did not have a lab animal club however we did have a Research Animal Medicine Club, which essentially incorporated lab animal stuff into it (though it was technically more research-focused in general). One thing you can try to do is form a student chapter of ASLAP. I have heard it is a thing, and tried multiple times to get it rolling into the RAM club at UMN, but was never able to get it done.

Ideas for what our club did:
- Tours of laboratory facilities and lab animal housing facilities on campus
- Tours of local industry animal facilities - pharmaceutical companies or medical device companies that have research animals
- Wet labs with fetal pig or rat/mouse necropsies
- Getting involved with the Biomedical Research Awareness Day (can get you contact info if you need it or you might be able to find it on Facebook)
- Bringing in lunch speakers to discuss lab animal medicine topics (social housing and enrichment of NHPs, common mouse diseases, steps to becoming ACLAM boarded, etc)

Let me know if you have any specific questions or feel free to PM me - I was the VP of the RAM club for 2 years so I have a lot of info about our club still rattling around. Good luck!

Thank you so much. You've been so much help to me already. I'm sure I'll be Pm'ing you with questions soon!

You can see if your state has a branch of AALAS that is active - good place to check for speakers. Also any school that has a lab animal residency usually has some people doing research that want to talk about it, especially if you can teleconference the talks so less travel is required. If your school is doing animal research on campus, they probably employ a lab animal vet (who may not be affiliated with the vet school). ISU is like that - the head of Lab Animal Resources has an office in the vet school, but doesn't really do much with the vet students besides help out lab animal club (lots of help!).
