this is to set up an equation of a line when all you know is one point (x1,y1) on the line and the slope of the line (m).

This is the equation of a line, where (x1, y1) is any known point on that line.

I forgot to say that, in addition to (x1, y1) being known, M (slope) is also known. Just FYI, to draw a line (or find the equation of a line) you need either:

a) two points, or
b) a point and a slope.

The equation you asked about is for (b).
