MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Getting a cold (hopefully not covid fam) the day before my first interview. Thank you universe, very cool.

Hey guys. Does anyone have advice on how to schedule interviews directly with the program coordinators (they are unresponsive which I assume is because of the massive amount of applications they are going through)? I have 2 interviews where I replied to their messages instantly but they still have not sent me available dates. How long should I wait before I send a follow-up email? Anyone with similar experiences?

I waited a few days then emailed again which was on the deadline they gave me. They quickly responded to that. Odds are they're waiting for the deadline if they gave you one, to then reach back out to everyone who responded.

It's been ONE WEEK, people. I wasn't freaking out this much over II numbers at the same date LAST year, and that cycle started on time!

Problem is nobody knows anything about this cycle cuz of the lack of transparency. You also have people claiming their PDs and advisors are saying if you dont have 6 invites or more by Nov 14th we should be focusing on SOAP which is stress inducing.

woah where was that??

Two weeks tomorrow with a shortened cycle. Plus we’ve already said above, we’re not allowed to judge by how neurotic someone is being. It’s the panic thread - a safe space to commiserate about our impending doom.

True. Though to be fair, those advisors and PDs don't know anything about this weird time either. Hell, most advisors don't know anything in a regular cycle!

The thing is with average stats I would totally go to any of those mid tiers. I have no desire for the top programs nor would I believe I would get an invite. Its crazy how many more like me are probably getting missed because of this.
Everybody gotta yield protect harsher now that theres no time or money investment in our interviews
Im going to keep believing to myself that I am getting yield protected : ) . >cries silently in corner.

Was it a LOI or a faculty member writing a letter or making a phone call?
Just an LOI. I feel weird about a faculty member asking programs for interviews on my behalf. Like I don't want something I don't deserve, I guess? Idk. I think that's just a personal thing; it's understandable to want to try to take advantage of anything that might help. I have no qualms about sending an LOI.

You should absolutely have people reach out If you have that option. Not doing it is a disservice to yourself. It’s nothing you “don’t deserve” it’s just how it works sometimes

Well... I didn't match last year, and I guess it has me feeling super-undeserving. Like, I do want the best potential doctors to become doctors. I don't know. *shrug*

Only 2 II’s. Applied to 35 IM programs. 233 step 1. 238 step 2. Panic?
Only applying to 35 programs as a DO with middling scores during this cycle was not the best idea imo. I’d double the programs asap. I’d rather have too many interviews than not enough, but that’s just me...

Has anyone reached out to programs to express interest yet? If you did how did it go?

I wrote one email today to a small, unaffiliated, non-fellowship, community program right in between where I grew up and where I live now, which are both <45 mins from there, to express my interest/ties/Level 2 score release from yesterday, and how I’m a good fit for the program’s mission....

got an obvious generic cut and paste reply about an hour later that meant nothing. Like “thanks, we’ll see your app when we see it. Good luck.”

Is it safe to say a program does rolling II's if they have 5 interview release days recorded on the Reddit spreadsheets at this point?

Asking cause it's one of my top programs and if it's a rolling system it's not as big a deal ya know. Definitely gunna hit them up with a LOI at some point.

I only applied to 39 IM programs and have 12 interviews

DO
Step 1: 223
Step 2: 250

It can happen! I think it’s just kind of random how they are doing it this year

second this, 223/250 DO with 12 II in IM, only applied 39, they are coming!
I’m glad it’s working out for you. But without knowing where both of you applied it’s a completely irrelevant response
