MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

So when I look at the view/print CV screen, all the stuff in it is out of order (not ordered by date). It looks fine on the View/print application page. Is that okay? If not, how do I fix it?

Edit: Also, for publications, can I distinguish my name in the authors in any way? On my actual CV I have my name bolded, but I can't do that on ERAS.

I numbered my publications so they would show up in descending order of my authorship position
Sorry if this has been asked.. when I click the View/print MyERAS application, everything looks good with the correct spacing and bullet points.

When I go to the certify/submit, it looks like crap - none of the spacing is correct.

Which one do program directors get and how do I correct it if it is the certify/submit draft?

I’m 95% sure they see the “view/print ERAS” one.

Holy crap. It only took me ~10 minutes. But I didn’t check the actual websites, just eras. If they have that buried in their website somewhere then they’re basically asking to go unfilled.
Well I’ll save you the time haha don’t do it. I looked through all the websites

The only mention of wisconsin requiring a personalized PS is a sentence within the description of their program on ERAS lol

Hurry up and do it before you decide to apply to even more programs.
This was my motivation for submitting, if I waited to apply any longer I probably would have applied to every program

but feels good to be apart of #SubmittedGang aka #DontGoBackAndCheckYourAppForMistakesGangAlsoDontCheckYourCreditCardStatementGang

It's hard for me to reconcile the fact that programs want people to apply that actually desire to go to their program with the fact that I need to apply to 60 places to be safe interview wise/match probability. Like I honestly only actively want to end up at like 5 of them and would be pretty cool with maybe another 10 but I MUST apply to these other 40+ places to ensure I match.

Basically, requiring personalized stuff is ****ing dumb. We all are trapped in a situation where we must get a job and it's definitely possible it won't be where we want. They need to get over themselves.

Classic Schrödinger ERAS dilemma, you are both applying to too many programs and not enough at the same time

If you don’t look for mistakes they don’t exist is my thought process

I keep adding programs because I like their name and then taking off programs because their website sucks. Definitely need to submit this on Sunday after I get my PS edits back...

Consensus on sending 3 or 4 LORs if the program website asks for 3 with no maximum?

I’m going off an assumption based on the most common ways I’ve seen them wording it (applying EM);

1. “Atleast two letters, one of which must be a group letter/ SLOE”: no limit.

2. 3 letters of recommendation, 2 of which must be in SLOE format from an Emergency Medicine Residency”: limit of 3.

3. “Maximum of 3 letters of recommendation, atleast one of which must be from an Emergency Medicine residency“: obvious.

1 and 3 are obvious but 2 is the one which is a little vague. I’m interpreting them saying a specific # as being their limit whether or not it explicitly says “maximum”.

Edit: very specific complaint so deleted lol. Just be sure to read through your deans letters and other official materials from your school with a fine tooth comb as they can have some unexpected mistakes...

My school doesn’t allow us to view our deans letter

95%.... sources? Haha this is giving me unnecessary stress that I'm submitting an application that looks like the certify/submit one.

I also really like the idea of putting numbers in the authorship order to change the order.... You did it for your authorship order? I am thinking of doing it chronologically so they can see most recent stuff

Someone mentioned earlier that they called an ERAS rep and they said that programs see the “View/Print CV” format with the line breaks, etc.

The View/Print CV or the View/Print MyERAS??

Oh look what I found... neuroticism answered. Programs can view either the MyERAS or CV. Not whatever that certify/submit crap page is

Can I just assign 4 LORs(3+1chair letter) to all the programs that I'm applying to instead of trying to figure out their cryptic LOR requirements?

Do we need to signup for Interview broker or Thalamus ahead of time to be prepared? I just went to both websites and couldn't figure out a way to, even if we are supposed to.

Dont need to for Interview Broker

So for research. Do you put the research under experiences and if you do a publication or poster, also mention that? Or just the poster/publication?

I'm an IMG and i plan on actually getting the ECFMG certification and the 3rd LOR by the 25th of Oct. As Notaprogdirector said, my app should reappear in their review pile once these documents are in, then it's still game. But I'm afraid of immediately getting rejected because of the lack of these on the 21st. When do programs usually send their rejections?

Yeah I did authorship order, because I wanted my first author one at the top. No matter how you do it I think numbering them is a good idea otherwise it just puts them on their alphabetically and it's a mess.

I'm a ******* and submitted my app with 3 letters being assigned to everyone. I wanted to be able to individually assign letters; I have two more that are going to be uploaded and I know that 4 are the max that can be assigned.

Should I withdraw my app and submit it again so I can customize which letters get submitted to what program?

Did you pay already?

Absolutely not. You would have to pay twice, and that’s even assuming you can apply to the same program twice in one cycle... which I’m not sure you can as mentioned above

Are people using paragraphs or Bullet points for description. I have heard that you should use paragraphs, but it looks soo sloppy.

I used paragraphs myself. I see lots of people on here say paragraphs and a lot say bullets. I came to the realization that it probably doesn't matter as much as think it does and said screw it, paragraphs because it's easier for me to convey my message.

should graduating magna cum laude from undergrad be put in the 'education' section, after the name of the degree i.e. XYZ, magna cum laude ? or should it only be included in 'other awards/accomplishments'?

You don’t need to sign up for IB, but do for Thalamus. And, yes, I’d make that account. You don’t want to be fumbling with it with your interview invite ticking away

i don't think there is a way to sign up for thalamus before being invited to interview somewhere. at least that's what their website 'Help' section suggests

If so, that’s a change from years past. Because I did when I went through the process

how large are the descriptions for stuff? I feel like there is disparity in terms of word count between projects.

Where are you finding these letter requirements? I was just going to assign four letters to everyone...

One of my letter writers sent me his letter to proofread like months ago and I didn’t catch a typo (said his instead of her). He already uploaded the letter ages ago. Would it be ok to send him a polite email asking if he can reupload it with the edit?
I think that would be fine, but I also don’t think it’s the end of the world if it doesn’t get fixed. Most of us don’t get to proofread our letters, so I’m sure they see little things like that all the time!

Anyone with 4, 5, or more letters think about using different configurations of 3-4 letters for programs in case a letter is meh? Like if a letter is bad/not good but unknown to you, to hedge your bets by not using any single letter at every program? Or am I going down the anxiety rabbit hole?

If you are applying to prelim programs, do you need a brand new personal statement geared towards the program and LORs? Let say I apply for anesthesia advance programs and need to find a prelim program. Can I submit my anesthesia PS and LOR to the prelim program as well?

Also, once I submit my application, what can I do and can't do? Can I add, remove programs? Can I add LORS and PS?

Thanks.

I'm using this technique.

On the applicant page of the website. To be honest you’re safe submitting 4 to about 3/4 of the programs anyways.

if you don’t do that then one of your letters isn’t going to get used at all. You can strategize like use one letter regionally if you know where the writer went to school or residency.

Im applying EM but one of mine is from a family doc who does a lot of OMM. I’m using that letter at former AOA programs.

Generally no, you don’t write a new PS for prelim years. They know what’s up so you don’t have to spend a whole page discussing your passion for hopefully finding the easiest intern year you can lol.

You can add programs. You can also remove programs, but you won’t get your money back so I’m not sure why you would. You can add letters, but only up to a grand total of 4. Can’t remove letters or personal statements that have already been sent to programs.

This is exactly how I did it. For instance, I know that 2 of my letters are really strong. So they're assigned to all programs. The other 2 are more of a toss up, so I flipped between 1 or both, depending on the program's instructions on how many LORs to upload. My thought is if they say "2 LOR" then they'll pick 2 at random and discard the rest, so I'd rather be the one picking which 2 they read. Same for when they say "3 LOR" on the requirements page, etc.
