Hey you all!
So I have heard about this collecting teeth before you start school in the fall, and I was wondering...does this apply to all schools? What exactly are they used for? How many should we collect, and for those of you that have already obtained them, how did you go about collecting them? Thanks for any info!!
Have a relaxing Break!!🙂 😀

At San Antonio we used the teeth to help us with a tooth id quiz and to learn the structure of each tooth in general. I believe they will also be used for practice next semester and next year in operative.
To collect them bring your prepared jar to general practitioners as they are the most likely to be pulling whole teeth with roots attached. Oral surgeons will have lots of 3rd molars but they crack most of those anyhow. Ask your dentist if he/she recommends any specialists to ask. You might want to ask multiple dentists to help you out -- they will not be surprised, they know you have to do this.

Dam*, I wished someone had mentioned this before. At work, I've been throwing away teeth w/o gold for months.

Hey eran76--I see that you are in Seattle, WA...you going to UW?
I just got accepted a couple days ago after my interview last weekend, and I am debating going there...what are your thoughts on the school? PM me if you get a chance!

Hi Tex, welcome to SDN! Looks like we'll probably be meeting pretty soon. 😀

I've collected my first 3 teeth, wizzies from a co-worker, this past week. I can't wait to get more!

BTW, what's your version of a "prepared jar?" I've heard of using formalin solution (dangerous?), 10% bleach, and Listerine to keep the teeth in - any advice on which works best, or maybe something different entirely?

I've been wondering about this, too. None of the schools that I interviewed at even mentioned collecting teeth and UIC hasn't said anything about it now that I've been accepted. Do they assume that I'm collecting them? Or is it different at different schools? I suppose I could just call the school and ask...

Thanks. Lemme know if you come to visit!
As for a prepared jar, I used 10% bleach. You can use formalin if you can find it -- I couldn't -- but if you are in San Antonio go to the second floor by the freshman labs and they will direct you where to get it in the labs. You will put them in formalin to completely disinfect them when you start school. Just put your name (my dentist was collecting for lots of people) and "toxic" yada yada with a label of what it is. It'll have all this in the letter that you'll get after you accept. Lots of time left to collect.
(I've never heard of using Listerine.)

what's this all about? teeth collecting?
I've heard about it, but really?
sounds kinda primitive...

Teeth collecting isn't so bad. Let's be happy we're not going into optometry - we'd need a much larger jar...
