SO....i got a call today that I got into Colorados vet prep program!!!

I'd basically go to Colorado State for a year and then automatically get into their vet school.

http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/cvmbs/vetprep.htm

there's the site about the information. i honestly feel really lucky and honored to get in. my mentor (who is in the vet prep program AND is a friend of mine!) said that 1900 people applied to colorado, 800 people did the disadvantaged supplemental, and 7 people got in. I'd basically get colorado residency and get to pay in-state tuition when i go to vet school.

geez....it still feels unreal.

anyway, wanted to share the good news. 🙂

That is so awesome!!!! I am very excited because I got the same great news today!! This was so not expected since I had already received their rejection letter. A friend of mine is also my Big Sis. I have not made a decision, but am honored and very interested. I still have my Davis interview this week.

whens the party?

Congratulations! I have a friend who was admitted to the Veterinary Scholars program at Kansas State. Same kind of "guaranteed admission" deal, although not designed specifically for disadvantaged applicants like CSU's program -- she is an undergraduate (presently a junior), but has a guaranteed seat in the DVM program. She's also wicked smart -- has set the curve in all of her prerequisite science courses. Don't you just hate people like that? 😀

That is fantastic news. Congrats. I wish more schools had programs like these.

Totally unexpected, but I too have been invited into the Vet Prep program. I received a call on the same day that I received my Univ. of Minnesota acceptance letter. I am still waiting to hear from Western next week. I for sure thought it would be a toss-up between Western and Minnesota. Now Colorado throws a wrench into my plans!

I am so excited that I got into vet school. This is my second time applying and I feel so honored to have a decision to make.

What do I do? Do I want to get going and start vet school this year at Minnesota (and pay out-of-state tuition) OR do I do the Vet Prep program for a year at Colorado and then go to their vet school next fall (and pay in-state tuition)???? I'm 30 years old by the way.

I've read the pros and cons list for both schools, but could someone give me more input or advice???

Congratulations Pitbull lover! That is really amazing. I don't know anything about Western, but if I were in your shoes I would seriously have to think about that one. I applied to CSU and was rejected, but it is a great school. I would probably lean more to going to CSU just because you would be able to get in state tuition, which is so much cheaper just for going to school for one year extra. I don't think that one year makes a big difference because you are definitely getting a spot in the class! Money is always an issue. Although, it depends on what school you like better, too. Maybe one school fits your needs more than the other and that may be a better way to decide if you don't want money to be a deciding factor! It is totally what you feel comfortable with! Congrats again on getting into vet school! 🙂

I'm so happy that I've found other people that got into the program!!! What are the chances that 3 out of the 7 people post on this site? lol. my mentor is Rick and he was telling me that last year he got accepted to mississippi, oklahoma, and western and still picked colorado's vet prep program.

i'm expecting to join clubs and find out about programs or workshops or tutoring thats available BEFORE even starting vet school. i want to make friends and get situated before having the most stressful time of my life. rick said that their teaching hospital is the size of 2 super walmarts.

i'm 27 (so i sorta know what you mean about an extra year) but i am so freakin excited! all the advantages we're going to have....meeting vet students way before hand and learning about professors and classes. Meeting 6 other students before vet school starts and having study groups!

Anyway, my friend said that if i were to get into michigan that i should visit both schools and then decide....but i'm not doing that. BUT that might help you decide.

has anyone made their final decision for the VET PREP program yet? I will be mailing my acceptance offer when I return home Monday!

Wow, this program sounds awesome and you should be proud! Congrats guys!

Yeah, i already sent my email. I haven't recieved that official letter yet though. I did send my fafsa and i'm hoping to enroll at CSU for half time to get some loans and financial aid. I hope. I wouldnt turn down this opportunity. we're moving in july (already told my landlord), i ordered a relocation package, and we're looking at houses to buy! we pay $2250/month in rent....if we buy a house for $200,000....the mortgage would be $1300! im soo happy!!

Seriously start the packing! That's a lot of items to sort through, especially when you've another quarter of courses to begin! Only bright side is it's closer move comparative to some, so good luck with the house hunt! :luck:

i'll be starting my 4th year of vet school at CSU in a couple of months. I also did the vet prep program before starting. back then when i received the letter of admittance i was not excited about doing an extra year, as i had already gotten into another school. looking back im really glad i made the decision to go to CSU. with rising tuition costs (even instate) and average starting salaries kind of at a standstill, instate tuition is a no brainer. then again if u find a place u really like go there. if u do decided to do the vet prep program make sure u take that field necropsy class. anyways, i better get back to studying, shoot me a msg if u have any questions

Gotta love the Fort Collins real estate prices! PM me if you want any info. on areas, etc. Also, www.coloproperty.com is the local MLS for Fort Collins, so you can look at everything available.

hi ferny10 and catlover! thanks for the information and support. 🙂

You will love Fort Fun, as we call it. Wish I was joining you.

Hi CKGilabert, just wondering if you have received any other information after submitting your acceptance form? I have only received an e-mail from financial aid requesting more info. from me, which requires a CSU id to access what they are asking for. I was able to get a CSU id from the admissions office...Thanks!

hey! i was actually going to ask you the same thing! LOL. you got farther than i did, i didnt call to get my csu ID yet. im lazy. i think we also have to call that guy to get info to get residency. I feel as though i'm forgetting something. i wish they'd give me a packet of info to fill out. also, did you put your parents info for fafsa? i was thinking of doing it (eventhough i'm 27 yrs old), but i heard we could qualify for scholarships if we do it.

talk to you later! 😉

I believe the parent info is only required next year for the PVM (double check me though, that is just what i think), let me know what you find out...i pm'd you with other important info., I had e-mailed Dr. Stewart and she provided me with some great feedback. Hope it helps. 🙂 I will be visiting CO the 20+21 to look at places and put my name down somewhere! I have yet to settle the domicile issue, I am waiting to find out where I want to live first (that's why I am going so soon). talk to you later.

Congratulations EVERYONE who got into this program! That is so super exciting!

Good luck with your decisions!

I have officially accepted to go to CSU for their Vet Prep program and have declined my acceptances for Minnesota and Western. I visited the school and Fort Collins and feel like it will be a good fit for me. I also met some of the current Vet Prep students and they were all very nice. The director of the program was even nice enough to let me stay with her when I visited.

sheltermedicine, I think I met your friend that is in the program... Leticia right?

So, I am starting to get excited now about moving and starting the program. It's nice to know that you guys, sheltermedicine and ckgilabert, are going to attend too. And we are all from California. I'll be PMing you two before the move. We can all meet up before the orientation in August.

YAY PITBULL LOVER!!!

I'm really glad that you decided. I was talking to Rick and he told me that you visited a few weeks ago. 🙂

I'm going this weekend and hopefully picking out a house this saturday. I'll be definitely moved out there June 15th.

thank god for this site! i was really nervous that I wouldnt know anyone and now I know 2 people that will be my study buddies! 🙂

YAAAAYYYY!!!😀😀😀 I am so happy you are going! 3 SoCal girls! Yes, Leticia is my big sis. PitbullLover, do you know where you are going to live??? I am totally stressing out about it, I will be in Fort Collins the 20+21 to visit.

Hi,

I spoke to an advisor at Colorado and she said I would probably be a great candidate for this program. I grew up in Honduras, Central America and definitely went through many of the challenges that are mentioned as examples of what a disadvantaged student is. I got my animal science degree at the University of Florida and I would really love to ask some questions about the vet prep program to somebody who has gone through it. Let me know if that is ok or if you know someone who would like to be friends on FB or something. It would be huge for me if I could get your input. Thank you!!! 🙂

Hey Ferny10!.... I am super interested in the Vetprep program and I really think I have a good shot to get in. I'd love to ask some questions if you can ever chat.... you went through the program and then veterinary school so I'm sure you have a great take on it. Let me know....thanks!
