Just wondering is there any advice on taking the colorectal oral exam? Is the format like General surgery exam and the approach the same where the examiner gives you all the history and physical exam? Thanks for the help

No specific advice. It is similar to the GS CE in terms of format.

Talk to your program director. It's pretty straightforward, but people do fail periodically. I can't discuss content as it's too small of a world.

Very straight-forward. Showing up to work everyday is the best preparation. There isn't quite the same rigid format as in GS- room 1 foregut, etc... room 2 trauma/cc room 3 miscellaneous. The written exam is considered the main hurdle, once pass that, a high percentage go on to pass orals. Those who fail usually either haven't seen enough in practice or have trouble communicating clearly.

Thanks for the advice, just got done with CRS oral boards Saturday, It was straightforward. When did you find out the results? General surgery was quick and same week. Thx

I was also there for the exam. I thought it was very fair, obviously the topics covered on the exam shouldn't come as a surprise to us at this point in our training. The examiners were professional and polite. Inbetween the written and oral exam, I perused the new ascrs CREST project material on the website, mainly watching the video overviews of each of the core topics when I could (15-30 minutes long each), starting about a month before the exam in the evenings and weekends when I had time. Some nights, I was busy enough with my practice that I could find no time to study at all. I overall didn't glean much information that I didn't already know from the videos, but I tried to cram in some factoids that I easily forget (doses of chemo regimens) the few days before. I also had some light quizzing from my other senior colorectal partners on and off as well. I feel that CREST would have been a good study aid for the Colorectal written exam, and had I finished fellowship this year, i'd recommend using it for that. I also went through the MC quizzes on CREST, some questions were copied from CARSEP, others were not. Good explanations for the answers too.

Putrescine, any idea when the results will show up on the website, I wish you luck, I hope its a high pass rate

Congrats on finishing. I can't remember the interval for results but your status changes on the ABCRS website quicker than any other means of notification. Might want to look there first.
