what would be a good place to stay for a columbia interview? i've never been to nyc before so any help would greatly appreciated! thanks 🙂

i'd suggest staying in the 1st year dorm if its your first time. that way you won't have to bother with the subway system, etc....otherwise, there are hotels downtown (like 80th street-ish) that are reasonably priced (Columbia gives a list of hotels through mail that you get special prices for)....i'd check that out...

or i'd stay in nj..right across the gw bridge. its cheaper and u're only 10min away.

It's not a good idea to spend your first morning in NYC trying to get from a hotel to 168th and Broadway. Stay with a student host so you can get a feel for the residence hall and the communal, coed bathrooms and showers ( 😀 ).

Disclaimer... the showers may be coed, but they are NOT communal!

Seriously, stay with us. We know how to have fun.
😉

thanks for the advice!

i found that the list of hotels was outdated - one of them didn't exist anymore, and the others were 300+/night

so, if you stay with a student...where do you sleep? i'm naive 😳 & have never stayed with a host before... do i need a sleeping bag?

thanks everyone for your help!

I think the student hosts can get cots (with blankets and pillows and whatnot) for you from the housing office.

I recently was invited for a Columbia Interview, but I didn't see any information about a student hosting program. I'd be greatly interested in such a program, think you guys can point me in the right direction?

yes, your student host in Bard can get a cot for you. Ask your host to request a cot from the Bard housing office several days ahead of time. (not everyone here is aware of this.) It includes fresh linen and a nice pillow.

it is much more fun to stay with us than a downtown hotel. we can use guests as an excuse to go out and watch baseball instead of studying for our exams. 🙂

hey, i called up all the places. there is one on 42nd street and 10th or 11th (sorry i don't remember the name!) that was the most reasonable ($120 i think), and just a quick walk to times square subway station, and just catch the A train to washington heights.

PM me if you want the exact hotel name, i can find it out tonight. also, i didn't see anything about student hosting stuff.

The best place for reasonably priced, nice budget hotels in NYC is www.hotelconxions.com. I did a lot of research on this before my last trip and their hotels have good feedback on other sites. You should check it out 🙂

you can get the subway from JFK to howard beach station, and catch the A train all the way to washington heights/new york presbyterian. even better if you get an express train. total: $7

A few notes--

1. For some reason, Columbia does not advertise the fact that they will set you up with a student host if you request one, which I was dismayed to find out the morning of my interview. If you would like to stay with one, call and ask the admissions office. I really wish I had known! 🙁

2. If you choose to stay somewhere else, commuting by subway isn't bad (and is MUCH cheaper...and quicker than a cab if there's traffic), but you do have to plan ahead. I stayed with a close friend on the upper east side both nights I was interviewing in NYC, and for Columbia I just caught the m66 bus that cut across Central Park and let me off near Columbus Circle/59th, and then took the express A line uptown to 168th which is where P&S is...this all took 30 mins. If you can stay somewhere close to the A line--particularly a place where there's an express stop (the white circles on the subway maps) you can get there within 20-30 mins easily.

if you can't find anything, i'm willing to host SDNers. I'm at the columbia undergrad campus, which is like a 15 minute shuttle ride away.

yeah try to stay with a current student. our first exam block (first yrs anyway) will end this fri, so after that, most of us will be more than willing to host. if you're a chick, you can also request to get a free breakfast with a current female student (for AMWA). (free breakfast = bagel and coffee at local bagel joint)
