I've been living off-campus in my own apartment for three years now and the thought of going back to a dorm (especially Bard Hall) is depressing.

Is anyone else considering living in an off-campus apartment in Washington Heights?

I am in a similar situation. I have been living in an apartment now for years and really cannot see moving into dorms. I was going to ask around at second look to see if there were close apartments or what other students do.

Nice.. I've been checking Craig's List pretty frequently, but I think its too early to start looking. I know that Columbia also has an office of off-campus housing

The day I received my package from Columbia I started looking at apartments. I am not even 100% that I am going to end up there but I got really excited about living in NYC so I checked our craigs list and a few other websites. are you definitely going to columbia?

Guys - I work at CUMC so I have been living in Washington Heights for 6 months now and love it. I live about 5 blocks from the medical center. If you are local you should go to Bard/Towers and check the bulletin boards. People often advertise sublets there. Otherwise, craigslist is a good place to check, but one of the best resources is the OCHA (Off-campus housing assistance) for the morningside campus. You can link to it from http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ire
You will need a UNI and password to access the housing listings (though not the sublet listings).

Good luck!

Thanks so much guys! I'm in love with the school, but I'm sharing a house near DC with four people now, and I can't IMAGINE not having my own kitchen. But I didn't want to be the only frosh who wasn't in Bard. I'm definitely thinking of living off-campus.

Do you know the cost difference (estimated) between living in bard vs. off campus? Does bard even save that much money?

Another freshman who def won't be living in Bard...I must have my own kitchen and bathroom! I think we can just go to Bard for social events and still feel like we're part of the class, etc. I've looked on craig's list for apts too, but am wondering if living near the undergrad campus/morningside would be just as good as living in wash heights....I'll probably stop inthe offcampus housing office during revisit to see what i can find.

Hey--- I was looking at the same thing.. I think that I'd want to live down near morningside campus, but its probably a lot more expensive. The commute isn't a big deal and I'm not sure if I'd wanna be around the med. center all day...

No way would I live on campus... I've been out of dorm living for over 3 years now, ain't no way I'm going back to sharing bathrooms and kitchens. It's a straight shoot on the 1 line if you live on the UWS. Some of the students I met on my interview even live in the village. I think a good amount of people live off campus because it is such a diverse group...

Sweet... I thought I was gonna be the only one... I don't think it'll exclude us from class unity. After all, we are in school all day together.

I have to say, there seem to be some huge upsides to living in Bard. 1 - Youre right next to your classes. Maybe it doesnt matter to you, but that extra five minutes of sleep I can get every morning before class adds up and is a huge bonus. 2 - The gym is in the same builiding! No carrying a gym bag for blocks or going outside after sweating in the winter, etc. plus cuts down on travel time again. 3 - There's a darkroom in Bard. Maybe not everyone is into developing their own pictures, but for me thats a huge plus...and its really easy, If anyone wants to learn it can be done without too much hassle. 4 - Despite what you think about being able to miss nothing socially by living off campus, I think thats untrue. The people living in Bard will undoubtedly form a different chemistry and atmosphere. This could be from studying late together, organizing last minute outings into the city, whatever. To me that is worth living in a kinda tiny room and sharing a bathroom and not having a kitchen....though I will really miss a kitchen...but i guess I can be patient and wait for living in the towers 2nd-4th years.

i hope you guys living off campus plan on cooking dinner for the rest of us every so often. on that note, i know we'll probably find out at revisit, but where do the students living in bard eat on a regular basis?

Kinda off topic but...

Does anyone know what type of grades we need to keep out acceptances? A's? B's? C's? Passing?

I have lost all motivation to work since getting in and I dont want to shoot myself in the foot.

Another question: Does anyone have any clue as to Wash Heights housing costs vs Bard housing costs? Is the general consensus that you could find a studio or one-bedroom of comparable price within a few block radius?

I am sure you can find an apartment near the Washington Heights campus, but my impression was that Bard hall and the other Columbia housing was cheaper. I can't remember for sure, but I think I heard that the one bedrooms for couples (I'm married) were around $700, which you could never find in Manhattan. The problem is that those apartments are lottery only, so since I'm waitlisted, I don't think I'll get in even if I'm accepted early in the summer. Oh well... If I were single, I think I would seriously consider the dorms, as they are so much easier (no lease, utility payments, security deposits etc) to handle (I'm assuming).
