Columbia or NYU

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Columbia is Pass/Fail/Honors. And when I interviewed there I asked about the clinical side, and the professor I interviewed with said the clinical experience gives you as much as you put into it - meaning if you only do the bare minimum... well, then you'll just get a minimum of practice and experience.

that is true at any dental school (exception can be UoP). Even in any other field it holds true for any educational institution.

If you're looking to specialize, I think columbia would be the wise choice. Also, I don't know what you mean by "tuition isn't an issue obviously" but NYU is actually I think 10 grand more expensive than columbia. and 10grand x 4years is not something to overlook. However, I think when it comes to genearl clinicals skills, NYU would probably prepare you alot better since they see like a quarter of a million patients a year.

At my Columbia interview the students I talked to weren't very happy with the place. I want to specialize so I would have gone there if I had gotten in, but if you're interested in a school that will train you to be a clinician in four years instead of one that assumes dental school should be 5+ years long then choose NYU. I'm very happy here for the most part and I haven't even seen my first patient -- that's supposed to be our strong point!

i cant say anything about nyu but i graduated from columbia in 2008 and am in my residency now and would rec the place. every school has stuff that you will have to put up with, but overall I really enjoyed it. I agree with the above post saying you will get out of the clinical what your put in. I did some crazy full mouth restorations and tons of implants.

I just graduated from Columbia, and I have to say how much clinical skills you will develop relies solely on YOU and not the school. I had plenty of experience at my school...then again, if a patient called in to cancel I would immediately call backup patients or help out in triage (rather than just go home and sleep, like so many other classmates). Regardless of which school you choose, it's really up to you how much you want to work while in school.

these are the facts I know:
NYU's facilities are newer
NYU's class is HUGE and they have clinic in sections (NYU is around 350, Columbia is 80)
Columbia has a better faculty:student ratio
NYU's graduation requirements are based on # and type of cases completed, as well as a "quota" (they have to do a certain $$ of dentistry, I think it's around $25k)
Columbia's graduation requirements have no quota, it is based on comprehensive patient care
NYU is downtown, in a more fun/edgy/expensive part of town
Columbia is up in Washington Heights: super cheap (for NYC)

Hi!
Go for NYU .. if you are looking for ACTUAL DENTiSTRY!
They ll make sure you have done Dentistry "Hands on".
Yes we have a large class! but that is because we have a huge patient pool!
You can do what you want to do and if you are the one who doesnt WANT to work .... NYU will MAKE sure that you do some REAL work!
Do not take my word for it! Come to school anyday at 6 pm and see for yourself....
STUDENT-FACULTY ratio becomes a non-issue....(all my caries check is done by 2 faculty MANDATORY)
All the best!

do u want small class size or big class size?

which part of NYC u wanna stay?

u wanna do dissection or not?

think about the tuition difference!

u wanna go to IVY school or not?

u wanna go to department of dentistry or independent dental building?

Sorry, I am sick and tired of talking about this again and again!!

Just visit the two places, and u will know ur answer! 🙂

Money is not a concern, obviously, but I got accepted to both and I'm concerned about which to attend. I don't want anyone making a decision for me, I'm mostly curious about clinicals at each. I've read posts that say columbia isn't as strong clinically as other schools, but compared to nyu does any ACTUAL columbia or nyu student (preferably D4) know how each compare as far as pro's con's?

Thanks

A close friend of mine finished from Columbia a couple of years ago.She is now doing her residency in Iowa. She told me that the iowa undergrads seemed to know more clinically than she did and her conclusion was that the only advantage she got from columbia was the name.Obviously I'm in NYU now and i'm loving it all the way.The exposure is fantastic, the diverse pool of patients is uncomparable and the are really theexperts at teaching dentistry ( i think)

All the best as you m,ake your choice.
