Columbia P&S Class of 2012

How much is rent at Bard? How about the Towers? Also, how big are the rooms at Bard? Does the bathroom situation work well?

Rates are variable in both, in Bard by room size and in the Towers based on how many bedrooms are in your apartment (you will pay more with fewer roommates). Rent goes up, at least in the Towers, by 4% each year. To give you an idea, I moved into my 3 BR Tower apartment in February of '05 (my first year) and the rent was $640/month. During my 4th year, I've been paying $738/month for the same space.

You will get a lot of opinions on this topic, but in retrospect I would strongly encourage people to think about trying to procure an apartment elsewhere in the city (we have several classmates just below the undergrad campus near morningside, and as far away as the east village), especially if you're the type of person who likes to separate school/work and the rest of your life! We're a little isolated up here in Washington Heights, and sometimes you can go for days without time or a reason to go downtown. Of course, this is all in hindsight for me. Give it a year and see if you like living in the heights. Many do! (There's even a Broadway show about it now!)

I know there's a large spanish-speaking population for clinicals. I was a french minor...are there french-speaking populations in the area to offset my complete lack of spanish skills?

Also, any suggestions on how to learn a language really quickly?

I'm with you on this one--7 years of French (though I haven't used it in awhile so who knows what I sound like now hehe) and no Spanish. I think I remember that there was a medical Spanish course offered by upperclassmen (?) at a few different levels, including beginner at P&S. That could be an option to explore.

Also, kind of a random question, but does anyone know if Bard Hall is wired for cable TV (i.e. not with an antenna but through a wire--would have to call and pay via cable company) in the individual rooms. I serached some old threads and didn't find a definitive answer. I love my TV--I'm sure I'll be watching less of it but I don't know if I'm ready to give it up!

Only 2 weeks until 2nd look. Can't wait to meet you guys!!!

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to decide how to get to NYC. I'm coming up from the DC area and would be willing to drive, but the costs of parking and gas (along with NYC driving) is steering me away from that option. I may be taking the good old chinatown bus. Anyone in the DC area interested in meeting at the bus stop or perhaps discussing splitting gas and parking costs for the drive up?

EBuff -- take this: www.dc2ny.com

It costs as much as the Chinatown busses, but it is SUPER nice, doesnt' mysteriously smell like food, and actually runs on time and honors reservations (fancy that!!) I take it to NYC ALL the time. And I'll be taking it to NYC for revisit weekend in a few weeks.

EDIT: I see you're also from CO, living in DC, and considering moving to NY? Me, too 🙂 Small world.

Alright. I couldn't let P&S 2012 sit on Page 2 any longer.

Does anyone know when orientation starts/when we have to show up in the fall?

Awesome, thanks! Now I can buy my tickets to chillsville for the summer 😎

anyone know where i can find the p&s 2008 match list?

Hey- I'm a P&S 4th yr. Usually it's posted online by now, or at least emailed out to the current students. I can post it if we get an email sometime soon....

I got the match list by email, but I wanted to take out the names. Hope the organization makes sense. I also didn't list the preliminary years, where applicable... for my own sanity. (To explain, some programs, such as anesthesia, require 1 prelim intern year, not necessarily at the same institution as the residency.)

Wow. 6 pediatricians and 6 neurosurgeons.

College of Surgeons and Surgeons? 🙂

Matching 36 into ENT, Gen Surg, Neuro, Ophtho, and Ortho is pretty interesting/amazing. Are Urologist and Ob/Gyns considered surgeons? It's not my place to decide. If they are, then we're looking at 48 future surgeons. Wowzas

I think 6 matching Neurosurgery is a pretty average stat for Columbia. I remember looking at past match lists, and the NSG matches ranged from 4 to 9.

Maybe 6 matching peds is the outlier here. I think that's awfully high for S&S... 😀

I heard that there will be major curricular changes for the class of 2012.. does anyone know the details??

Also, does anyone know what the grading interval is for clinical years?

i don't think the curriculum changes are going to apply to you guys...i think it is for 2013. in case youre interested, i think the talk is they are going to condense first and second year into 1.5 years, mostly by truncating anatomy (which is longer at P&S than at most schools--a plus in my opinion). can't help you regarding the clinical grading scale, too far in the future. feel free to ask or send me a private message if you have any other first year questions.

pjl is right. 2012 won't get the new curriculum.
Grades for clinical years are honors/pass/fail.

Woot 2 days til revisit! Sadly I will be missing the first half of thursday as I get there in the afternoon.

Hey dienekes are you stilling missing part of revisit?

... ack. I think I've sorted most things out. I have to leave early on Thursday, though. I have to teach a class at 6...

Has anyone heard back regarding financial aid? This is the only school from which I have not heard a thing from the financial aid office.

No, not yet. But according to some M1s, they received their financial aid info at revisit last year if they attended. Maybe this will be the same for us (let's hope).

will you be around for the BBQ?

Can't... I have to take off at about 3 or 3:30 to teach this class.

I guess I'll never find out if it was Dinosaur or Dallas. 🙁 Not that it would matter, since I'm a vegetarian... hahaha. You'll have to let me know.

I'll be there Friday, though. 👍

ahh thats no good! I get there just before the bbq and the md/phd friday schedule is different than the md one! maybe we all have lunch together friday

Would I be missing out if I didn't go to second look on Friday? It seems like there isn't too much scheduled on that day anyway...

Well, they have stuff about the curriculum Friday morning... that might be important if you want to compare it to the other schools on your plate.

Free lunch? That's always good.

holy crap. I almost couldn't sleep last night, because I was so excited for revisit. Does that make me a mega-dork? Yes. I have no problem admitting that.

🙂 🙂

I thought the revisit was totally cool! I met some awesome people and demonstrated my uncanny ability to put myself in awkward situations.

By the way, I thought it was funny as heck that one of the 4th years mentioned SDN during today's lunchtime Q&A.

Haha, it couldn't have been too awkward (I hope). 😛

I'm about as smooth as 12 grit sandpaper. 😳

Also... there are a lot of intimidatingly smart, amazingly talented, and remarkably well-traveled people in our future class. 😱 I was very much in awe of everyone I came across. That definitely didn't help. 😀

STORY TIME!!

Hahaha.

I'll give you guys 5 instances. They all happened over the course of about 45 minutes. They're only mildly awkward, but the rapid fire nature of them makes me a star.

1) In line for lunch on Thursday,
Dienekes88: "Hi, I'm dienekes88 (insert real name here)."
2012'er A: "Hi, I'm ******"
D: "Oh snap, I friended you on facebook a couple weeks ago!!!"
A: "Whoa. I guess you did..." *mildly shocked*
D: "I'm sorry I recognize a lot of people from facebook... like her. I friended her too... "
2012'er B: "What?!"
D: "What's up facebook-friend?"
B: "Hi... " *looks around kinda creeped out*

2) At lunch on Thursday
D: "Hey *********!"
2011'er 1: "Hi..." *confused*
D: "Have you spoken with (mutual friend's first name) lately?"
1: "who?" *slightly more confused*
D: "Ummm... (mutual friend's full name)"
1: "oh... yeah, we spoke last week. Well, I gotta go..." *sketched out... and still confused*
D: "alright, I'll talk to you later..."

She totally didn't recognize me. le sigh. We were at a summer program 5 or 6 years ago.

3) Oh man #3, so a friend of mine and I were talking about surgery and surgeons on a bike ride. Dead serious, he turns to me and says, "If I ever have a surgeon, I hope to God he has never smiled in his life. If I have someone crack open my chest to administer direct massage to my heart, I want that dude to be one serious f*cker." I thought about it, and it made sense. Maybe "love" is not an appropriate feeling to have for surgery. By the way, I heard that Dr. Craig Smith, Interim Chair of the Department of Surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian, has not smiled since deciding to become a cardiac surgeon at the age of 3. I also heard that he can do an off-pump quadruple bypass in 38 seconds. Rumor has it that Dr. Smith made Chuck Norris cry once. Contrary to popular belief, Chuck Norris' tears do not cure cancer.

By the way, I plan on pursuing surgery.

I was talking to a prospective 2012'er and an MS1, and we were talking about how my friend, who's a PGY2 in Ortho, "loves" surgery. Given the seriousness of surgery I said, "dude, that's frickin' weird... how can you love cutting people up and potentially hurting someone?"

You could hear the proverbial crickets chirping as both guys just stared at me.

2011'er 2: "I plan on pursuing ortho too."

4)
Waiter: "Are you finished?"
D: "What? What the hell?" *flustered because I've already made several awkward comments and didn't expect someone to talk to me from behind*
W: "Are you finished?"
D: "Holy crap, yeah. Sorry. Thanks. No... I mean... yeah... thanks. What?"
*cue laughter*

5)
D: "I'm awkward... mostly 'cause I'm a megadork."
*stares from my table*
2012'er C: "It's alright..."

There are more... so many more...

Every time this thread is pushed onto the second page of "Allopathic Class Threads," a piece of me dies.

Bump to keep dienekes a whole man.

Also, I checked and there's no bike storage in Bard. The person in the housing office unhelpfully suggested I keep my bike in my (optimistically) 11X13 room. I've got one of those leanto wall racks, but still - that's a lotta bike in a little room.

hahaha. Thanks. I actually started posting in the MPH forum to get my Columbia fix... 😳

If we can put hooks in the ceiling, then it might work. I remember hearing that a 3rd year kept a couple bikes and a set of rollers in her room in Bard. The rest of her bikes were at a friend's place or something.

I may have to follow that example and put my TT bike, race wheels, and back up wheels at a friend's place...

Try to get one of the 10x20 rooms... it's huge and it's got a great view of the river/GW bridge. The only downside is that it doesn't have a sink.

OH NO! Did it get pushed to the second page again!?

NOOOO...

By the way, these 10x20 rooms sound pretty sweet. That's a pretty decent size. Who actually needs a sink in their room anyway?

So what's everyone doing over the summer? I think I'm going to do a lot of serious chillin', 'cause I need a serious vacation. I'm thinking about racing my bike and maybe trying to upgrade to category 2 (this summer is probably my last chance to race bikes seriously...). I was also thinking about putting all the money I've saved up into a trip to watch the Tour de France.

... or I could just drink beer all day.

No! Of course not! I dont know what you are talking about

I will be doing research at my ugrad school for a month (gotta finish up my project) then off to columbia for more research... woot

Sweet. Is the research going to be similar or are you going in a new direction?

Hmmm... maybe we could have a couple pre-P&S get-togethers. I know there are more than a few P&S 2012'ers in the NYC area!

On an unrelated note, I emailed Dr. Dickstein about computer requirements for the first two years (no one at Student Affairs had any idea about it or about whom to ask), and he replied:

"There is no requirement regarding brand or components. Personal preference should dictate PC vs Mac. I would recommend a laptop so it is portable, and a printer. A wireless card is essential."

Thought I'd post it in case anyone wanted to know. I'm getting a laptop as a (superb; love my parents) graduation gift, so I was curious.

Has anyone gotten their financial aid package yet? I looked on my student services online (I went to columbia for undergrad) and it said they have received all of my documents, but I haven't heard anything yet. I just want to know how much debt I'm going to be in!!!

I called them on Monday to ask what the hold up was about fin aid. They said that they will be mailing award letters to students soon (end of week or early next week).

BUT they offered to tell me the breakdown of my package over the phone. The unit loan package for Columbia this year is $24,750. If your EFC is low enough for your family to pay then that's all the loan you have to take out.

I think Columbia is pretty generous. It is by far the best package that I've received which makes it 90% certain I'll be there in the fall!

I went to the financial aid office yesterday, and they said they haven't mailed financial aid packages. They will do so next week. They couldn't even tell me my whole package because it hasn't been finalized (they printed my financial aid package for me during revisit, but it was adjusted after that, so I wanted to know the new breakdown). Classic Columbia...

Hi, everyone..

I've been stalking this thread for a while, but didn't have courage to write until now..Columbia's the first school that interviewed me & sadly I got waitlisted..
sucks to be me..🙁 I'm just wondering if anyone here got in off from the waitlist..
Is there anything I can do to increase my chance of getting in?
Any good advice?? :idea:I'd really appreciate it..

I really really really want to attend Columbia..😀

I'm sorry to hear about the waitlist. 🙁 From past threads, it looks like the most important thing to do is let Dean Frantz know that you're in love with P&S. Have you written a letter of interest/intent? You can include updates on your activities, the reasons why P&S is a great fit for you, ways you would contribute to the P&S community... etc. Maybe call the admissions office and see if you can talk to him?

I don't think there has been very much (or any) waitlist movement yet...

Good luck!!! :luck: :luck:

Hey -- P&S 1st year here again. I just wanted to let you guys know that the academic committee voted in favor of changing 2nd year from h/p/f to p/f. So now 1st and 2nd year are both p/f. This'll be true for the class of 2012 as well. For 2013 and beyond, there will be a new curriculum that will be more condensed, but also p/f.
