Hey, for incoming first years at Columbia, are you guys gonna live in Bard or find a place of your own? I'd love to get to know my class, but also I want to have my own bathroom and I'd like to start living on my own. Any current med students have advice on this? Thanks.

First of all, your name is great. I'm a big fan as well. I am also a first year at P&S. Living in an apartment has its advantages, own bathroom, kitchen etc, however I believe living in Bard for one year is a great experience. You will never again have the opportunity to live in such close quarters with your classmates and it is a priceless bonding experience. Although I am anxiously awaiting moving into an apartment in the towers next year I really enjoyed my year in Bard. And where else can you gather 10 friends in one room to watch the OC.

I don't have the faintest idea what exactly you guys are speaking about, but I can tell you that bonding and what not with your classmates probably won't be what you think. It's not going to be like undergrad where everyone goes out and stays out late and what not. Plus after spending a good chunk of the day with them, it's nice to spend time with other people. I love a lot of my classmates but I absolutely am driven up the wall by some of them as well. I could imagine that living in tight quarters with them might make that worse.

Just my .02 from a guy in a fairly small southen town medical school. So what do I know? just wanted to give you something else to think about... Best of luck to you all!

I'm actually trying to make the same decision. I'd love to get to know my class, but I do value my own space and such. Having lived in university housing for 4 years and just finishing a year of being an RA, I really don't know if I wanna do the whole residential hall thing again.

I kind of feel like Bard is an invaluable experience....

ill definately be going to bard...the bathroom issue is my biggest concern, but i think it will otherwise be a fun and great experience...plus, bard has some good facilities (dark room, music room, lounge, gym, basketball/indoor soccer, indoor pool, cafeteria, a lounge on the roof w/ beach chairs and bbq's etc...)...we will have up to 3 more years to go into the towers, might as well have some fun in bard for a year...
i did an internship in bard hall 2 summers ago and stayed on the 7th floor. ill be back there in august!

Yeah, I'm definitely doing Bard because I don't want to miss out on the close-quarters bonding.

What actually do you guys mean by bonding? Is it necessary to live in such close proximity...sharing a bathroom and having no room to stretch ones legs all for the sake of BONDING. I would assume that after spending 30+ hours in class we all should become pretty good friends. Lets face it, bard housing isn't that subsidized so essentially we will be paying for exactly what we get..crappy accomodation. Ayway, I can't complain, for us out of towners this eliminates the stress of looking for an apartment from the get go and who knows it might actually be fun watching half naked men walking down the hallway after taking a shower 🙄. By the way is there an IKEA anywhere in the vicinity of Bard? See y'all in August

LOL...Honestly I'd refuse to live in any dorm-type of accomodate at ANY school...and I mean Med school in a sense is like High school...you see the same people like all the time, and even if you don't live in Bard, you can still go and visit people anyway.

I would definately stay in Bard. I think spending time with your classmates in a more social setting is a lot different than seeing them in class. But then again, I have lived in off-campus housing the past two years, and wouldn't mind a change for a year. During revisit, just about every current student I talked to recommended it.

Hey guys,
I finally made a decision and I am definitely attending P&S. I?m nervous but excited. I would have post this in the P&S 2008 thread but that thread hasn?t been around lately.
I?ll be in bard. Has any new info come in lately? I haven?t sent the housing application. I?ll do that soon. Good luck if any of you are graduating and hope to meet my new classmates in the august.

Has anyone received a housing application yet?

apt! rooms at bard too small for me and no kitchen and community bathrooms don't work for me.

Where you live is going to be a personal issue that can't be decided by someone else. Just to add to what I said before, living in Bard for a year is inexpensive, convenient, and a great experience. Starting at a new medical school, in a new (sometimes daunting city) can require a lot of adjustment, and having to deal with a landlord and a commute can add to the confusion. That being said there are opportunities to living in an apartment, either on or off campus. But from someone who came from living in a really nice, big apartment to a Bard Hall dormroom, the transition was not that bad.

Sorry, by housing application I meant the form and the 6 address labels that they sent us with the acceptance package.
