Hello,

I was just wondering if any of you have any input on the Columbia Residency housing. I know the availability and whatnot... I just need to know how the apartments are... specifically those buildings on Fort Washington Ave. I haven't seen the apartments yet but the lobby looks a bit shabby. Are they clean and well kept? How are the appliances, like the stoves and fridge? All the good and the bad... any info you have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi String Bean--

Washington Heights is a fun and woolly neighborhood, all at the same time. Marble foyers and sub-zero fridges it ain't, but it's perfectly comfortable, safe and convenient.

Since it's the last truly affordable neighborhood in Manhattan, many residents choose to live in the community up here. You can get a decent place, not Columbia-owned, for less than $1000 rent-- including gut-renovated apartments that are clean, bright, modern and cool. Other choose to rent tiny studios in the 80s/90s & Amsterdam area and commute up on the C, since the Upper West Side has a lot more action than WaHi.

If the interior condition of your apartment is extremely important to you, I suggest you search around the neighborhood for one of the aforementioned gut-renovated places. The Columbia-owned housing is fine, but not sparkling.

Btw, it looks like you're an R2... are you coming here for fellowship?
