I know that at columbia dent students take basic science classes with meds.

How is this experience like?

Do you get to make a lot of med friends and hang out with them?

Do dent students get graded on the same standard as meds do?

I heard somewhere from this forum that dent students are treated as second citizens to meds. Is this true?

I would appreciate any columbia dent students answering this question.

I made some... but i know some of my classmmates know a lot of them...and even have some living together next yr 🙂

No, we're on two seperate curves... SDOS will be going to a Honors/Pass/Fail system next year as well...so who knows what will happen...but definately not on the same curve

Sometimes in some classes they will refer to the med students...but usually they're pretty cool bout it and fair...

did you get in already? are you planning to come?

I couldnt speak for Columbia, but here in Harvard the same system is used.

The class is seen as one, Faculty are extremely careful to refer to both medical and dental students in lectures, in some cases, some lecturing slides are only focused to dental students for which medical students are advised to "as informational only".

Besides the Medical School lectures we also take Dental courses only, pretty interesting both. Initially, I had my second thoughts about the system, but now at the end of first year I realize how good it is.

We get together extremely well, in fact distinctions whether you're medical or dental are not made at all. Medical students have a lot of respect for use since we're faced with their curriculum plus the Dental School's one. We all get together awesomely, most my friends are medical students. I always get the question "Are you a dental student?, "I thought you were medical" showing they consider you the same and respect you as well.

The pass/fail system is great as well, absolutely no pressure which allows you to concentrate in what you like plus doing research in whatever field interests you.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,

AS
